Mortgage Protection "Overpay"

Options
Stick with me on this one....

I took out a mortgage with the Halifax around 6 years ago and they sold me payment protection. I never checked the amount at the time until around 3 years ago and saw that it was approximately £155. On querying this with them they said £55 of the payment was for a second property...I do not have a second property!
After some arguments they agreed to refund the over payments...

Now last month we decided to completely cancel the protection and my wife called the call centre. They tried to convince her otherwise but then said they could reduce the payments from £101 to £16!!! Surely this should have been offered in the first place, as there is a huge difference in the cost.

What I am trying to ask, is there any way we can look to recoupe the difference in payments (£101-£16) over the last 6 years?

Many thanks
