Refusal of inheritance?

Not sure I am posting it in to a right board.
The situation is:
A son of someone I know has died intestate living his flat in negative equity plus about 15k of unsecured debt. His Estate is negative without a doubt/ can an next of keen refuse to inherit it as it is obviously not beneficial for my friend to inherit any debts.

Many Thanks

Well, if the estate is in negative equity, there is nothing to inherit,
    therefore nothing to refuse.

Debts in the deceased persons name are paid from the estate, if there is no estate, they cant get paid, therefore they are wiped out.

But someone needs to do some sorting out.
They really need the help of the CAB or something like it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

You cannot inherit debts, do not panic.

Debts die with the person. That is debts after their goods have been seized, so you couldn't inherit their car, new telly, CD collection, necklaces.... as they'd be sold to settle the debts. But once the person's stuff's been sold, if there are still debts left that's the end of it.

Did he not have life assurance or a pension from work that pays a death benefit?
