This is ridiculous, The Student Loans Company
I graduated from uni in 2009. In December 2009 I paid the loan off in full and they sent me a letter confirming this.
In March - June 2011 they send me letters saying they are going to send me money, I call them saying I don't want any money, they respond saying that was a clerical error, please ignore.
Now they're saying I owe them over £600. I haven't received any money from them but they say that my tuition fees for 2007/2008 weren't paid to the university until 2011 as the fees were under review and they didn't pay until they were confirmed. It wasn't a clerical error in March 2011 and I was incorrectly informed to ignore it.
I know I need to call the university to check this out but I know that all finances had to be sorted before the end of the course, we weren't even allowed to graduate if we had library fines outstanding!
How can this happen? It's infuriating! I thought it was case closed, loan all paid off. Isn't it too late for them to be demanding this now? After they gave me a settlement figure which I paid off?

are you saying that the debt figure is wrong
or that they are late claiming it0 -
They said that the loan was paid off in 2009, but the first years fees weren't actually paid until 2011 as they were "reviewing" the fees and only came to a final cost in 2011.
I don't yet know if the debt figure is wrong - I would have thought it is but i'll call the uni today to see if their story is true. They've never mentioned this was happening and yes, they are late. At first I thougt it was a scam!0 -
It does happen, usually caused by the university. In December each year, universities are sent a file that they need to return to the SLC to confirm the student is still attending, the course details are correct and the fee amounts are correct.
Some universities are notoriously bad for dealing with this, even though you'd expect them to so as to obtain their funds. It may have been the case that the university didn't act on this until now, or your old local authority didn't deal with it at the time. Obviously it's a case of not knowing which authority you were under back then from your post.
I think this is most likely what the issue is.0
