Non working son able to borrow from Pay Day, please help

Options
can anyone advise me about a problem we've got with our 23yr old son, who's taken out 2 Pay Day loans without our knowledge. He's taken a loan out for £420 in April, after he'd been sacked from his job Feb 20th and another one for £120 which we think he took out to help pay his 1st loan. Both of these loans were given to him when he was out of work and also unable to claim any Jobseekers benefits until the end of September, due to the 26 week rule when someone's dismissed from employment and of course, we're no receiving letters threatening legal action, as no payments have been made since June, which we're assuming he managed to pay when he took out the £120 loan, to pay off some of the loan he'd acquired in April. Is it legal for a loan company to give money to people like my son who have ZERO money coming in? Any advice or help would be very much appreciated as both myself and husband are getting very stressed over it all.
Thanks

Firstlyhe is 23, and while you may guide your son, it's his responsibility as the end of the day. The legal action won't affect your credit rating atall, only your son's.

Your son is responsible for the loan and took on the loan without having a way to pay for it.

As a parent, take a breather and relax :) Inform your son and provide advice, but step back, it's his problems to deal with and he made the decision to take on the loan.

  • At what age do you think your son should be responsible for himself?

Did he put he was employed down on the applications for the loans?
    Thinking critically since 1996....

Quick. Get in a compo claim in respect of this stress!

Unfortunately I doubt that your son would be able to pay you any compensation without resorting to a payday loan company and lying on the application.

As for the loan company - they have done nothing wrong (other than actually existing in the first place as legalised loan sharks in a civilised society).

No idea what he put on any form or if there even was one and you're right, he should be responsible for himself, but sadly he's 23 going on 13 just now

Absolutely right and great advice, just hope I'm strong enough to watch him go through it, thanks :)

If you are genuine then you are refreshing as most parents want to blame anyone (mostly the lenders) then the irresponsible borrowing of their DS/DD.

Im sure you will get the support of the vats majority here and also on the debt free wannabe board to guide your son to, so he can manage his debts.

Just to pick up on this....
When someone has been dismissed there is a possible sanction of up to 26 weeks. This starts from when he first makes a claim. Has he actually claimed JSA and been told how long his sanction is? if not he needs to apply now
If he does receive a sanction, assuming he is single, he should be able to get a hardship payment which is a % of JSA
