In Scotland the debt is written off. In England and Wales merely rendered unenforceable. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

thanks for the helpful, kind responses
posted this on another board as well and got pages and pages of vile comments

You should make some sort of an effort to pay what you owe.
Try to be responsioble by offering a monthly payment plan or something like that.[/Q
The original creditor will have long since sold this one ( I would hazard a guess at), so all supposed moral obligations (whatever they maybe) have gone out of the window if our lovely cuddly debt Collecting scumbags are involved. Probably bought for a pittance as well.
If you can get past the statute barred timescale by ignoring them, you go for it.
Only pay back what you are legally obliged to. However if you feel you have some misguided moral responsibility to pay it back, then fair enough, but don't take any notice of other peoples morality where money is concerned.I'm Debt Free :j 2/09/2013

thanks eye opener
interesting that you say this ..."However if you feel you have some misguided moral responsibility to pay it back, then fair enough, but don't take any notice of other peoples morality where money is concerned"
....how do you mean?0 -
It is my belief that while the debt may disappear from your credit file after 6 years it has not actually gone away as long as the creditor has made an attempt to collect it during that time. Sending a letter to a last known address probably counts as a collection attempt, even if no actual contact was made.0
