Yes, any union would recommend it. I was lucky that it was ruled an Industrial injury as the manager hadn't done his part of accident book.
    Accident declarations

You can apply for a declaration that your accident is an industrial accident.

    How to apply

An accident declaration is not a claim for benefit but will be helpful if you decide to claim benefit for your accident in the future.

If you wish to claim Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit for an accident at work you should complete a form BI100A.

If you want to have your accident declared as an industrial accident immediately and you do not need to claim benefit until later you should fill in parts Parts 1-7 of the BI 100A only.

It doesn't seem fair that he's losing his bonus for being off sick due to an accident so therefore his employer is causing him a loss.

    I assume he's not in a union?

My husband used to work for a big company, and a bloke there had an accident,(although it only being minor),he went to hospital to get checked out and then had the next day off,and it was their policy that all the workers lost a percentage of their bonus if anyone had time off sick.
Although this isnt fair it appears they can do this.

I understand that but if is an accident at work due to poor working conditions etc. then they should penalise staff.

It's fair. Bonus is for those who work extra hard I take it, and since OP isn't there, bonus shouldn't be paid. I'm assuming OP only lost the bonus for the duration of that 2 weeks.

But the threat and discipline is too harsh. OP didn't do anything stupid and since he's injured whilst doing his job, he should be entitled to a reasonable paid sick leave. OP, stop getting stepped on and join a union.

    Some companies, not all companies.

Then you get the thousands of employees doing the most stupid things, like not wearing their safety boots and not wearing their hard hats, then they blame the company for not insisting that they wear them when they lose a couple of toes of get a belt on the head from something.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I recall a worker losing his hand to a drill because he lost concentration, busy chatting away to his friends. Then he blamed the employer for lack of protection gloves. As if they'll give him chainmail gloves capable of withstanding a drill meant to drill large holes in metal plates. Lol.
  • The loss of bonus will be for the whole year not just the two weeks he was off.
What is probably the most annoying about all of this is that he works really hard. The manager who is disciplining him even admitted that he is the most hard working out of the whole team. He isn't the type to mess about and was following all the correct procedure. The health & safety officer who saw the cctv confirmed from what she saw that he was.
At the time of the accident he wasn't in a union, but he has since applied.
The doctor signed him off for up to 6 weeks but he went back to work after 2.
