When a solicitor carries out searches when they are in the process of doing the legal paperwork, what do they mean when they have to carry out searches?

Typically they mean local authority searches on the property being mortgaged to check for anything that could affect the value of the property. For example are the council planning building a new road next to it.
They will also carry out a bankruptcy search against the mortgage applicant.0
