P/T worker feeling alienated.

I have posted about my place of work before, but last night I came home seriously pee'd off! Just to clarify, the father owns the business and the Son is supposedly a manager there (a crap one at that!).

I work 2 days a week (Mon/Thurs) and am one of 2 P/T office workers (the other one works Tues/Wed).

About 3 years ago a F/T office worker and a F/T warehouse chap got made redundant to save money. Now we have 2 F/T office workers and a warehouse person who does need to come into the office to complete various tasks. One of the F/T people is a fairly new recruit (Y) and the other one is the bosses (A) girlfriend who was originally brought in to help (C), but is now a F/T worker.

I am right fed up of the place, C has taken over everything, regularly moves things around so you can't find them, changes procedures and doesn't tell you, then "mentions" it to you when you've done it wrong.

I do like Y, she is a nice person, but I do find her snappy sometimes. Yesterday she nearly began an argument with me about the filing, without going into too much detail, sales invoices are filed alphabetically by the name of the company, we only keep the last 12 months in the cabinet in the office and then we box them away. They are boxed the same way, alphabetically as they are in the cabinet. We recently boxed some away, I started them and I think the other P/T lady finished it off. Yesterday, Y had one of these boxes out sorting the invoices saying to me how they should be in invoice number order. A was looking for an invoice last week and made a remark about they should be filed that way (bearing in mind he knows nothing about how we do things or file in the office). I said no they are kept in alphabetical order when boxing away and it's been that way for as long as I've been here, unless C has changed it and not told me! She says "I will ask C tomorrow" and for the next few minutes it was a debate as to who was right (A & C were both out of the office yesterday, as they went away for a weekend).

This is just one of the many examples why I feel like because I work P/T I'm some kind of idiot and whatever I say doesn't mean diddly. I get asked questions about how to stuff, but the conversation usually ends in the person saying "I will C tomorrow" or whatever

I know the only solution to my problem is to find another job, but just wanted to vent. I suspect the other P/T lady is happy to ride it out as she is coming up to retirement age and I believe is planning to retire next year.

Rant over! :(

Also wanted to say that A's own father has said he's reluctant to retire (he is 70) and leave the company to son, as the company would fold in 6 months! Believe me he is that rubbish! Also I think that A wanted his girlfriend working there, when she was just helping out she openly said to me that she had no intention of working there!

Sounds like the process need documenting.

big stickers on the archive boxes (this box is sorted ...............)

If there is no succession planning the job will go eventualy, so think about that.

    Am unsure what this means?

big stickers on the archive boxes (this box is sorted ...............)

    The boxes are labelled A - C, D - F etc.

If there is no succession planning the job will go eventualy, so think about that.

You mean make me redundant? I suspect they won't replace the other P/T lady when she retires.

    Thanks for your reply.

    1. the processes need documenting so there is no I think it is done this way no it's done that way.

A training manual is one approach that way a temp can come in, be given a folder that says what needs doing and how it is done.

    3. succession if boss retires and the place goes bust.

She has spent endless hours typing up instructions for things, but no-one else seems to get a look at them, they are just for "her".

A couple of years ago she typed up new contracts for everybody, but none of us have ever seen them, let alone signed them.

The "manager" (son) frequently hoards orders etc in his office and takes forever to respond to customer enquiries that only he can do, hence the customer will ring up, quite irate as to why no-one has got back to them or their order hasn't shown up.

We are not allowed to give prices out for things until they have been "updated" on the system (which has been happening for the last 12 months). Hence he takes forever to give a price to someone. I don't know about you, but if I ring up a sales department for a price, I would expect to get one there and then, or at least not have to wait too long if they need to get back to me, for whatever reason.

When the full timer got made redundant, they said I was going to learn this that and the other, but now she's taken over it's all gone out the window and the focus is on their new brand spanking full timer!
