Hi Everyone,
Not sure if this is ok to post in here please advise if not.
Just after some advice on an issue a friend of mine is having. They recently split from their long term partner (Not Married). They had bought a house together a while ago and now they have split the other partner has moved out of the house and is now refusing to pay their half of the mortgage.
They are in the process of selling the house but this is going to take time. Is there anything they can do to force the other person to pay? At the moment they are having to pay the whole mortgage which they are struggling to do.
The mortgage is a normal joint named mortgage so are equally responsible.
Any advice?
Regards
Al

You may request the bank to change the mortgage to Interest Only until you sell the house. This would atleast reduce the monthly payments your friend needs to make for the time being. It is to the discretion of the lender to change the mortgage, hopefully if you explain your motives (that you are trying to sell the house) they might allow this to happen.
Other members of the board will come up with a more sensible answer though0 -
What did they agree the exit plans would be when they took out this debt?
Will the threat of defaults on the credit records make them cough up.
Problem is that they are due to pay 1/2 the mortgage but as the other person has exclusive use of the property they owe a bit of rent.
Get a lodger is one way to fund the difference.0
