Re-mortgaging with problems from partners debt

Options
My colleague is moving house and was going to transfer the mortgage which was held jointly with their spouse. The mortgage was transferred to their name only about two-three years ago. The spouse who left then ran up £2-3000 worth of debts. These debts have now been linked to my colleague who had no knowledge of them, but has now prevented them from moving the mortgage to the new property. My question is; is there a way of distancing their financial affairs from their former spouse, or any other way of rebuilding their own credit rating to ensure that they can apply for a mortgage. Ironically they do not have a credit card or any other form of credit as they always save to buy larger items.

Your friend needs to obtain their credit files from Experian and Equifax and get them in front of someone who knows a bit..

There is not enough information (understandably) to allow much more comment, as it really makes a huge difference to what was recorded, when, how much and to who..

Key sanctions are late payments, defaults and CCJ's and the distinction is key.

She can disassociate herself from him on Experian and Equifax, although if they were joint debts then they will stay reported. Remember credit cards are never joint, they are always one holder and one added on..

Even with adverse information recorded, mortgages are available potentially subject to conditions.

  • Thanks Dave, I'll pass that on. Hopefully they can disentangle them-self.
