diabetic hamper of treats?

hi, my dad has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. obviously it is still at the diet control stage but he has been told to cut loads of things out of his diet. i thought for fathers day i could make him a hamper /gift bag of treats suitable for a diabetic. he isn't overweight, his body is just not dealing with the glucose levels anymore. he has a very sweet tooth but doesn't smoke or drink (very occasional baileys).
so i wondered if anyone who has diabetes or knows someone with diabetes could reccommend suitable products.
cheers

Hey,
I don't have diabetes or know anyone that does but I have seen lots of diabetic chocolates and goodies in Thorntons.
My Dad has Coeliacs disease so we are always hunting out things like this for him.
Good luck

Hi,I'm no expert, but did suffer from diabetes when pregnant. I was advised not to be taken in by chocolate & biscuits"specially for diabetics" because they contain bulk sweeteners such as fructose and sorbital, which affect blood sugar levels in the same way as the "normal " stuff does, and that these products were just marketed As "suitable for diabetics" so in effect you wouldn't be able to consume anymore of a diabetic product than a normal one. I was told that I the diet recommended for diabetics is the same healthy eating that is advised for everyone and that no "food was banned"
Diabetes UK has a website that you could try for more advise or if your dad has been referred to a dietitian they may be able to help.0 -
I have type 1 diabetes and I have always been advised by the staff at the various clinics I've attended over the years to steer clear of "diabetic" food products. For myself, I'd agree with what nottslass said about maintaining a normal healthy diet with a few treats in moderation.
That said, I don't know much about diet-controlled type 2 diabetes. Do you have a list of what foods he's been told to avoid?0 -
My mum is diabetic and for mothers day i bought her some diabetic food from Boots. They sell quite a good range of chocolate, biscuits and toffee. How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard - Winnie the Pooh0

Just to add to the debate here:
All my family from my parents generation and upwards are diabetic (all that are left anyway) and I feel it is only a matter of time for myself too. However
My Mother hates all the diabetic food. not only is it s lot more expensive, it does no more good or harm than the regular stuff, except sorbitol is a good laxative. And furthermore, she really dislikes the tase on them too. Give my mum the choice of two squares of diabetic chocolate or the same of the real thing, she will go for the real thing and there will be no difference to her levels.
I'd go for healthy alternatives rather than diabetic and save your money.0 -
Hi
My husband has diabetes (type 1).
A nice treat is diabetic crispy cakes. I buy Boots diabetic milk chocolate bars and make it with some rice crispies and sultanas. It only takes 5 mins and he really enjoys them. He isn't keen on diabetic chocolate in general but I think he likes this as he doesn't usually get to eat cakes.
There are some healthy products that are good for a treat too. I buy tins of fruit (the ones in the natural juice and not the syrup) and he has it with sugar free jelly. Your dad might enjoy that as a desert some days.
Sorry that these aren't really suitable for your hamper idea. Good luck with it.0 -
thanks for all the responses. i'm not sure whether to bother now as i don't know exactly what he is allowed and i don't want to encourage him to eat the wrong things. i feel that he would probably prefer the one square of real choc to the 2 squares of diabetic choc like your mum consumermonkey. he is yet to go to the diabetic clinic (appt soon) so only has a diet sheet so far perhaps the clinic will give him more info. i suppose i feel bad as he doesn't have any other vices. he would always say if we wanted to get him a pressie then to get him a big bar of choc would be enough. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

Hiya!
You can buy diabetic hampers here:
Diabetic Hampers

It's from Diabetes.co.uk - seems they're partnering a diabetic hampers company. I've posted comps from these guys before and I've won a few things from them so I'm a fan.
