I don't think your rights are any stronger as a parent than a non parent - I know in English law an employer can change your conditions with notice citing business need- not sure if Scotland differs if at all. Troble is with so few jobs around at the moment employers know they have employees over a barrel.

I'm assuming there's no other family around (yours or his) who could help for this additional time? Is there a sports club or anything like it that could take your child? Though I suppose finding one that's happy with one Saturday a month would be hard. I'm guessing a baby sitter may cost you more than this Saturday would pay or you'd have considered it.

Could your son go to a friend's house on the 'extra' Saturday, and then you reciprocate by having the friend over at some time that suits their parents?

As a working parent you have the right to make a flexible working application, and say that you would find it difficult to work the saturday, but they have every right to refuse such an application so long as they can show the business reasons for such a refusal
