How many lightbulb moments?

I had two LBMs I think - One in September, when I read an article about my bank coming down on people living in permanent overdrafts (um, me!) and I started tackling stuff. I didn't properly get going though until the end of January - I was feeling down, starting spending again & realised that my credit card was more than it had been in the September!
I still sometimes doubt my lightbulb - have not got into the habit of bringing lunch to work STILL, and I do sometimes end up coming home with stuff I really didn't need, but the total is going down, which is the main thing!Total Debt 13th Sept 2006 (exc student loan): £6240.06

I think I've had two major ones really. The first was in October last year, when I realised things couldn't go on the way they had been going. The problem I had then was that I had some major work done on the old car (hitting a deer full on is never a good idea), and then some other bit and bobs made me resort to spending on credit once more.
However, in Feb I started on the track to debt free, and plucked up the courage to call CCCS. Am now on a DMP with them, have made my first payment and have never looked back.
I actually track my money now! I file my statements! I take action if things don't look right!
I'm basically a right stingy !!!!!! now! I popped to the bank today to give them a whole load of 1ps and 2ps in exchange for a lovely £10 note!
For the first ever, I've stopped impulse buying and make my money count.
And I'm actually really happy about the situation:DChuffed to be member 11 on the DMP mutual support thread.

Hi
I think I have been one of those people whose lightbulb has been flickering for a while before finally coming on with a bang this month. I tried all sorts with the best intentions to get out of debt but always ended up where I started.
Then I heard about Martin L so checked out this site, found a link to CCCS and am now starting a DMP.
Also thanks to everyone on this site I have also cancelled the PPI on my loan which has given me about a £4K rebate but found out that have only actually paid off about £600 of the amount borrowed (have been paying for two years)
Without this site I would probably still be chasing my tail!Total debt £ 20,000 as of March 07

I only had one lightbulb moment and I was totally focussed on paying my debts off after that. Every spare penny went on it for about 3 years and I didn't buy any treats, clothes or anything and ate value food all the time.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I had a forced lightbulb moment. Basically I could get no more credit so decided that I had no choice but to pay it back and have to live within my means. I am so grateful this was the case, otherwise I dread to think where I'd be now.
I am not sure at what point I had made the decision to go full heartedly towards my debt free wannabe status, but I thank the day I did!!

I have been having lightbulb moments since I was 18 (and thats 23 years ago!). Ever since I got my first store card and started to live beyond my means. I have paid debt off and then got into more debt on and off for years. My mum has bailed me out year after year after year.
I had another lightbulb moment in 2005 when I was pregnant with my fourth child and I was determined to pay off my debt before I went on maternity leave so I could stay at home. I didn't and I lost my job (and so did OH). Basically my lightbulb, although flickering up till this point, could have landed planes.
Anyhow, the last year has been hard but rewarding and I am in a totally different mindset now. I actually find it very difficult to spend money now. 2 years from now I will be debt free (apart from my mortgage).

hi
i would like to say i have had my LBM but to be honest i think i have a small flickering every now and then!!!!!
i cant quite work out why but just when my debts are reducing and i have paid some of them off instead of throwing the spare £'s at the others i always take on more debt, just recently a shiny car at £9.5k why do i keep doing this to myself when i really know better.
