I assume that your friend knew of the dress code before she applied for the job ?
Is your friend also considered to be rather attractive ?
If so, I am sure we all know that this would have been a contributing factor in her actually getting the job (in preference to less attractive females or males).
Surely this is sex discrimination also ?
Although as this worked in her favour I guess she is not so bothered about that ?
If we are going to get moralistic then surely we cannot pick and choose to suit ourselves what we agree / disagree with ?
She may not have realised that this was criteria for getting an interview - in fact, highly unlikely. And besides, it very much sounds like you are saying it is her fault in some way - the only person who is at fault here is the sleazeball committing the discrimination.
High heels cannot be safe in an environment with a high likelihood of spills. And I cannot see that her boss can enforce her to wear a short skirt. Suggest she requests in writing to change he uniform stating H&S concerns and her dignity. If her refuses or makes her life difficult I suspect she would have grounds for constructive dismissive and discrimination.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Probably wont be applying to work in Hooters, mind you the girls do wear trainers.:D

Tell her to point out to her employer he could be causing damage to her feet by forcing her to wear high heels for her shifts.
In terms of uniform, a uniform must be unisex (as far as a I know), i.e. if men are allowed to wear trousers women would be also. Similarily if you had a man wanting to wear a skirt you could not prevent him under sex discrimination law.0 -
Is it sexist =Yes
Is it borderline illeagal - probably under discrimination
Will she get tips and earn more money wearing a lot more clothes than clubbing or in the summer - yes
Morals V Payment - I chose payment.
My tips (tax free) 15 years ago were approx £60 per night - upto £100 per night on a weekend.
Mind you we were paid more per hour if we showed more flesh (not hooters style back then, but certainly going near the acceptable line).
It's a personal choice - I may not do the same now I am a parent - but can't dispute the benefits at the time.0 -

When applying for a job in a nightclub, a young attractive female stands a better chance of getting the job than a less attractive, older, female/male (sexist, ageist and attractive-ist all in one go !).
I would be extremely surprised if a young attractive female who applied to work in a nightclub was not fully aware of this.0 -
Being of an age where we used to roll our school skirts up at the waistband to get them to an acceptable - to us - shortness, I'd be tempted to adjust it in that way and gradually lengthen it to see if anyone notices.
Mind you, I've been at a charity event tonight where some of the young waitresses were wearing skirts so short and tight that I felt obliged to look elsewhere when they leaned over tables. And I am confident that the only instruction was 'black skirt / trousers' rather than SHORT black skirt! So presumably some of the female staff at this bar job don't mind wearing short skirts.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Brilliant idea, I love it!I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -
Thanks for all the responses, glad to see i'm not the only one that finds it abit tasteless. With regards to interview she said she didn't actually have one she was shopping in town with a friend that already worked there and they bumped into the boss who said if she was looking for work she could start that friday, she is only a young lass 18 I think and she is bonney looking, she has raised the issue at a staff meeting with the boss who told her that she had to wear it as thats what got the guys to come into the club. She is a sweet lass and seems quite naive so I just wanted to see if they was any legislation with regards to work uniforms that could back up her argument.0

Sorry, but naive is just about as polite as you can put it, fella walked up to her in the street and said she could start Friday - that should ring alarm bells with anyone!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0
