When will I get my tax rebate? How much?

I've been working for 9 months as a contractor on emergency tax, and just got made permanent, so I gave them a P46 along with the signed contract, etc..

my start date is on the 6th August. will it be processed before then, or on the 6th August, or when I get my first paycheck as a permanent employee?

How long does it usually take to get the money back, and am I right in thinking I will get 75% of the tax-free allowance back?

Not sure what you mean by "working..... as a contracor" but assuming that you were on PAYE then the first question is were you on emergency tax. Your post suggests that you feel you have been overtaxed quite a bit, which is not the case on emergency tax. If you have been taxed above what you expect to pay then you have more likely been on BR or 0T tax your payslip should show which.
Assuming you have paid extra tax which is possible if you have only just filled in a P46 then to get this back you will need to contact the tax office for last year's tax, only this year's will be repaid through your employer. When this happens will depend on what you filled in on your P46, there are three options A, B and C, which of these did you select.
Do you have any adjustments, that is taxable benefits, tax owing, allowable deductions etc. to your normal tax code?
The amount that you get back will depend on the rate of tax you have paid, assuming you paid at 20% then you will get back 20% of any tax allowance you were not given.

To find out when you P46 is being processed you need to ask your payroll dept.

    Hi

Yeah, I was on PAYE with the 0T tax code. I thought this was emergency tax. Also, I ticked option A, and I don't have any adjustable benefits, etc.. to add.

Am I right in thinking then (from your post) the P46 will give me the tax back for this year, but I need to call them for last years? Every time I called them they just said fill in a P46

    Thanks

No 0T is the code that an employer uses if they cannot use emergency due to the employee not filling in a P46. As you ticked option A they should now use the emergency tax code which is 810L on a cumulative basis, which will from the details you have given be the correct tax code for you. This will correct your tax back to beginning of this tax year; but you will need to contact the tax office about last year with your P60 details and also details of any other taxable income during the year.
