Telephone interview for a bank HELP!

I've got a telephone interview with HSBC and I'm really nervous! I've tried looking up practise questions online and tried to do a bit of research but tbh I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

With regards to research what do you think the company will be looking for me to know about them?

Has anyone had a phone interview with them before, and do you remember what kinds of things they asked for?

Any help anyone could give me I'd be very grateful!

Company research is always the same sort of thing.... what they do, where they do it, any specialties or areas of interest, plus read the career http://www.jobs.hsbc.co.uk/14-en/HSBC.aspx section which will normally talk about its culture etc... can always mention that you read one of the appropriate profiles on it and you particularly liked XY&Z from it. You can also draw parallels to yourself, so the Customer Service profile says you need to be patient so you can say that you are and give an example if needs be

One important thing is if the question is about the company or about the role. They are two different things and you need to focus on the right one depending on the question, people too often blur the lines between them.

Never had an interview with HSBC but I strongly suspect that if it is a customer service job then itll be fairly straight forward with just a couple of questions of the "give an example when" type things. Exactly what will depend on what sort of environment you are going to be working in but typically it could be an angry customer, a confused customer, difficult team member etc. Just make sure you give the complete answer - what happened, what YOU did, what the outcome was
  • Thank you so much for the reply. I've applied or a cashier role so will take a look at the link you provided and make sure I let them know I fit the criteria! :)

If I were being interviewed, I'd try to make sure I had a calculator close to the phone just in case they started trying to test my mental arithmetic!

I had a telephone interview with RBS a few months ago for a similar position. Don't know if HSBC will be the same but RBS were really only interested in the selling side. I wasted over an hour of my life going through my cv, explaining I had a customer service background as well as data and technical, that I hadn't done any direct selling, them saying it was fine, doing their mental arithmetic tests then failing the interview at the competency based stage as I had no direct selling experience and had too much team working experience. Was one of the worst experiences in my life.

I hope HSBC don't pull this on you, and good luck
