Android Data Roaming Ireland/N. Ireland

I have just been billed by Vodaphone for mobile internet, listed as WAP icon_arrow.gif O2 (Ireland), the charge was £1.66 +VAT.

Not a big deal really but Data roaming is switched off (unticked) on my Android phone, surely this means I should incur data roaming charges?

I wouldn't have thought a Vodafone phone would have roamed onto O2, unless I'm missing something?

Is there anything else you might have done while you were in the South?

I can remember the day, I wasn't actually across the border just close to it in Magilligan, I may have used my phone to look something up on the internet.
I'm not disputing the charge (I can't remember one way or the other) but I thought I had set the phone so that it wouldn't happen - don't want to go to somewhere further afield and end up with a large bill

You will not incur any data charges when roaming if data roaming is switched off.

Do you have any apps running in the background that may be getting updates?
this happened on my HTC with a weather app that received updates every few hours, this will certainly be charged as data usage

Apps wont update if data roaming roaming is turned off

I should know better than to say this but - I'm sure I leave Data roaming unticked ALL the time and I did get a charge for being connected to O2 Ireland! Is it relevant that the charge was for WAP?

Queried this with Vodaphone who said - not unheard of with different phones where they don’t class northern and southern Ireland as different countries.

Think I need to install APNDroid or something similar

That sounds like utter nonsense from Vodafone to be honest. When Data Roaming is turned off on your phone, it shouldn't roam (for data) to *any* other network which isn't Vodafone UK, regardless of whether that network is in the UK, Republic, or Outer Mongolia.

Methinks they're trying to fob you off.
