I want to go to college

Hello,

I'm 25 years old and live with my partner and daughter (one on the way) in Wolverhampton.

I have worked since leaving school, until recently, I left my job on April 14th 2012.

I have been diagnosed with E.U.P.D and as a result I am now claiming ESA (IR).

I have not heard much from the ESA since I started the claim May. I am getting payments every 2 weeks but I have not had any medicals or interviews.

As far as I am aware I am meant to have an evaluation to see if I am eligible for further payments or put me in a 'group' ?

Anyway,

My psychiatrist has advised me to get into college and use the training, coupled with councelling, to get better.

E.U.P.D is such a difficult condition to live with and understand.

I have completed my initial asessment to get into Walsall College on an Access course but I am not sure how I am going to pay for it.

Could I get financial help?

Sorry for the long post

Does your oh work? Do you claim working tax? What ESA group?

Support ESA prevents funding as not a work related benefit under 2013 rules - wrag group gives access to funding. Some colleges will fund on ESA support out of LDf.

Low income hb and ct can

    Hi.

No she doesn't. No we don't. I'm on the income related ESA and I believe it's support.

    What is LDf?

If support grp then the ESA won't passport you. Other income related benefits should ie council tax

LDf learner discretionary fund. As long as the college isn't interpreting the LSC guidelines re support group not being eligible as not work related (unlikely but they are ambiguous) then income will get it free.

When speaking to them inform of income benefits like council tax and housing benefit, only mention esa if directly asked. Most fe colleges prefer ct bill as proof as has address and all household members - so probably won't ask. If you have young children you may also be able to claim childcare if relevant and access to funding from LDf. Eg buss pass if over 3 miles, books etc.

What are your career plans after the Access course and how will your medical condition affect them?

    Hi.

My career plans are to become a social worker. Ideally working with youth or criminals.

My condition will not affect anything if I remain focused and continue with my counseling. My psych team have said that the condition can be beat within 4yrs of diagnosis.
  • If you Google EUPD disorder and look on the wiki page you can get a pretty good idea of the condition.

You may struggle with the DipSW with EuPD - but that is a year away I guess.

Have you spoken to your local authority and Uni re your condiition for realistic advice about end employment? If not then do so before the end of your access course (so plenty time) as you may wish to change.

A few of my HEFD students failed interviews for similar disorders for DipSW - the competition is fierce for places on this course.

If I do the access course am I not limited to Social Work when it comes to Uni?

Not at all - Depending on subjects - I take they have requested Maths, English and or Science and a sociology (criminology, pyschology or sociology) it opens up lots of courses.

The choice for Uni can be made during UCAS - best to keep it open depending on health and future capabilities.

    Thanks again.

I'm not going to get to excited as there is a very good chance I won't get on the course and therefore won't need to worry about the funding!
