MSE News: All supermarkets should supply prices online, MP says

How would this ever work for companies that stock tens and tens of thousands of lines that have thousands of offers changing on a daily basis.
I suggest the MP gets a job working in a supermarket to see what a stupid idea this really is.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
...Given that Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda do publish prices online because they offer online shopping, this is sufficient without forcing supermarkets to do anything more. What is needed is the app to generate the price charts over time.
Mysupermarket already provides that kind of functionality. At least it will tell you the highest price and the average price of any product over the past year.0 -
....I believe Tesco in particular started off reasonable but then increased their prices once they had a large consumer base. ...
Tesco used to be a discounter - the motto was 'pile it high and sell it cheap'. That all changed when it invented the Clubcard, discovered 'sophisticated marketing', and overtook Sainsbury's to become No1 Grocer in the mid 1990s.0 -
The thing is even if they did this (and it would be hard work to get it organised) all it could do is a price comparison, NOT a quality or more importantly a best value.
The thing that I like best about Aldi is the lack of these up and down prices and stupid offers. I know week in week out what a products cost is and it rarely changes. The products I have found on the whole to be far superior in taste and quality to all the "value" ranges, but if you did a straight side by side price comparison you would have no idea.
I buy my meat from a local butchers/farmshop where the meat is high quality, high welfare local produce. BUT at simular or slightly higher price that the supermarkets and sometimes even lower. Shows how much the big boys rip us off. I can get a middle sized locally produced free range chicken which is far tastier than any water filled rubbish one I got from a supermarket for £5-£6. It will feed 6 of us for 2 meals easily and if I stretch it 3 or 4 (we have a teenage boy who eats for england and DD1 is a big gymnast so has a good appetite and needs her protein lol-effectively almost 4 adults really).
ALL their beef is well hung and yummy.
The mince beef is so soft and delicious and lean, even the best ranges at the supermarkets can't compare. A 0.5 kg bag (often you get a bit over lol) is £3.
I find we eat less meat as it is tastier and more meaty somehow. They also do stuff like game-rabbit/duck etc all for very little.
Now on a straight price comparison how would you ever check quality. I prefer to look at value ie price compared to quality and TBH I feel the big boys especially Mr T have consistantly pushed down quality and not always to keep prices down. We simply could not afford to shop at Tesco for all our food and only occasionally go in for an offer.

Sounds like just what I need, the ability to see all the prices in the supermarkets I can't shop in.0

And the costs of this enormous undertaking would of course not impact margins at the deep-discounters at all, and of course would not in any way be passed on to the consumer...0

What bothers me, is that Waitrose, Sainsbury's, ASDA and Budgens (and probably others) price match to Tesco, which means that we're paying Tesco prices wherever we shop.0

I shop at Tesco & due to mobility issues I struggle to get round the whole store so use to miss out on bargains. Now I log onto Tesco on a Wednesday & do my shopping list. And thanx to an app I have on my mobile I can find out which aisle the item is on. This has helped considerably with my mobility issues & also with my shopping budget.
Someone said the websites only show what's in your local store, I know this isn't the case with Tesco as the same items show whether I log in or not & several items it shows aren't stocked in my local store.
Someone also said about Tesco Express charging more than in the main store - these stores are for convenience. My Tesco Express is nearer to my house than my main Tesco is & I don't mind paying extra & in the long run driving to the main store would come to the same as the little extra I pay in the Tesco Express. In 21 weeks I've saved £1,011.00 on my grocery shopping & a very healthy stock worth over £1,300:j

If only there was some website out there where users alert one another to supermarket deals and other money saving stuff....Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.0

It does only show items from the store that your deliveries come from, that might not necessarily be your local store. Otherwise it would be a waste of time as you could order items that they didn't stock in the store your delivery comes from and they wouldn't be able to provide.0
