PPI on Loan

I bought a kitchen in 2003 and the gentleman who came round to measure up and take the order etc insisted that I take out Payment Protection Insurance on the loan.
I wrote to the lender about 3 weeks ago to claim back the PPI, but they have written back saying that whilst they provided the finance to me for the PPI, they did not sell it to me and that this was taken out through the kitchen company. As my complaint was specifically about the advice I was given and because the Lender neither sold this PPI to me, nor were they present at the point of sale, they do not feel that they can investigate my complaint. They suggest I contact the kitchen company and ask them to investigate this, but according to the lender, they are no longer trading.
Is this information the lender has given me correct in that they are not responsible for selling me the PPI, but the kitchen company ?
