They've always turned sludgy green for me as well.
  • Hi all adviced needed please, lastnight i opened a bag of dried mixed beans and soaked them overnight so i could make a chorizo and bean casserole today (which turned out quite well!)

Anyway I totally overestimated how many beans i would need, so i've only used just over 1/2 of the beans. So i've drained them and rinsed them well and put fresh water in them and put them in the fridge, will the still be ok for cooking tom or even tue if i rinse and refresh again tom.

what do you think- they are a mix of butter, aduki, kidney, blackeyed and a few other etc.

I do not see that a day or two will matter.

You could freeze them and use them later
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Hi pinkparrott,

I also think they'll be fine to use. I'll add your thread to the main Pulses Quick Questions thread as your query may help others.

  • Soaked some chickpeas overnight.

Popped them in my new (very cheap £9.99 argos) rice cooker thinking that'll do nicely to given them a bit of a boil up before I bung them in the slow cooker. Cokered them with boiling water from the kettle and went to eat my breakfast.

DH returned with the paper so sat around with a couple of mugs of coffee and read for a bit.

    cleaned bathroom etc.

DH said "what do you want doing with these chick peas" at about 11am "it has gone over to keep warm".

Perfectly cooked chick peas:T :T . Not over boiled and soggy, but nicely cooked and in good shape.

The layer on the bottom I did chuck as they were a little "toasted" but the rest are fine and the rice cooker is fine!

    I will do it again!

Does anyone know if you can cook red lentils and then freeze them for later use in recipes?

Actually, what is the correct way to cook red lentils?
Recipes often say to cook them for 45min but after only 25min mine turn to mush!

    Many thanks for any help!

  • Hi, would be grateful for any advice... today I tried to make a lentil stew curry thing in the Tower SC I picked up in a charity shop. I cooked the following for 8 hours on low (and didn't remove the lid until the end): two tins of chopped tomatoes, large mugful of red lentils, two chopped onions, frozen spinach, spices. I didn't add any additional liquid or do anything to the lentils other than wash them. At the end of the eight hours the SC was piping hot and the stew had definitely been cooking (smelt and tasted great, I totally get now why folk love their SC) but the lentils were definitely undercooked and the onion had a little bit of bite left. I'm having to finish cooking it just now on the hob. Does it sound like the SC is a bit dodgy, or that I should have pre soaked the lentils or added more liquid?
