Half way to free, need advice

5 years ago I got myself in some right trouble, credit cards, mobile phone contracts and a back loan plus losing my job = not being able to pay them all. I had 8 debts in total and last year I've managed to get myself a really good job as a water inspector / customer liason officer.

I've paid off5 of my debts totally. I now have 1500 on a credit card, and 750 for something I cant even remember :\ plus 6500 to my bank for the loan.

I've setup a £200 DD for the bank loan and plan to pay more one off payments on top of that to try and clear it fast as I can. The other 2 I'm paying off £100 a month single payments.

I'm really trying hard so I can put this behind me and move forward but How can I move forward after paying these off? I need to obtain a good credit rating, I want to be able to buy a house. Im 31 now and have grown up a lot in the last 5 years and feel very devastated that I'm in this circumstance.

Once your debts are all cleared the best way to build up a good credit history - is to keep the credit card open and use it for a couple of purchases a month and then repay in full when the statement comes.

If your card has been cancelled or you have opted out of new spending then once your debts are clear apply for a new credit card to do the same.

Do you know what is on your credit files? Do you have defaults on the accounts? if so when are they dated? what other negatives do you have showing?

If your problems started around 5years ago then hopefully the majority of the bad things on your credit report will have dropped off by the time you have repaid your debts and saved up a deposit.

Hello, Thank you for the reply.

I've applied for a free trial on xperian's website. I can then see my rating I think? But I have to wait for them to post me a Pin to login.
