Taking 2nd job whilst on career break for 1st job....

My wife yesterday got a new job on a years contract.her current job allows her to take a career break of 12 months, so she wanted to exercise this option whilst taking the 2nd job just in case it wasn't extended after the first year.

Obviously employer #1 will retain p45 but she will not get paid a penny by them.

Is it possible to get a second p45 or similar for her second job so that she only pays basic rate tax rather than emergency tax?

Would appreciate any help with this.

TIA.

Basic rate tax will work out higher than emergency tax for most people, though in this case it may be the correct option; cannot say without more details.

What is happening at her old employment, if they are keeping her on the books but not paying any wages the usual action would be for the payroll the put through a tax rebate each pay day (often done automaticaly by the payroll program) untill the tax year end. Has she checked with payroll about this?

check the terms of the career break,

    some do not allow employment.

some don't keep the same or any job open.

Thanks for the replies, will obviously investigate further.

The new job will be around 10k i guess and the old one which is with a supermarket was for a bit less.

Now wondering do the supermarket need to know about the 2nd job at all?

The terms of my employers career break provision specifically say that you can't take on other paid employment during the career break.
    You need to check this.

As the above posters say, most policies don't allow other employment during a career break. There are exceptions, such as if you career break is to go travelling or because your partner's job is making you relocate for a period of time. However the exceptions are very specific and may be company specific. Many people want to take a career break while attempting to start their own business, so that if it fails they can return to their job, but this isn't allowed either.

Check the documentation before accepting the contract.
