Help!

Although this is rather a long story, I'll try to keep it brief.

Basically, in June 2009 I purchased a car via financing from a garage for ~£3000, at ~£80 for three years. However, after six months, I decided to part-ex the car for a different one at the same garage, moving the outstanding debt onto the new finance agreement. (It should be noted that the original agreement was with a different company.) - again over 3 years, but this time at ~£115 per month.

I'm due to make my final payment in December, however I'm now receiving letters from a debt collection agency on behalf of the first company seeking payment of ~£1200. However, as far as I'm concerned the garage salesman assured me that he would take care of the transferring of debt between the two companies - and so I don't recognise the debt. I've not missed a payment on the new car, so I'm at a loss and rather worried.

After the first letter, I contacted the first company via mail requesting all information they had regarding this account, however it's only been a week so I've yet to receive a reply. Unfortunately today I've received a second letter from the debt collection agency informing me that they will send someone round unless I contact them.

Should I contact them while I'm refuting the debt, or will this make matters worse? Or is it possible to ask the collection agency for time while I refute the debt with the finance company?

Have you got the paperwork from your finance?

The first one doesn't add up, £3000 at £80 per month over 3 years is only £2880 and that doesn't include any interest.

What were the figures for the second lot of finance, amount borrowed, cost of car etc etc?

I wouldn't worry about the DCA sending anyone round, they threaten that loads but very rarely do it, just advise them that you are in dispute at the moment.
