Opening Night

I applied for tickets for the opening but it appears so did 78 Million other people. Alas I didn't get any tickets.

I was thinking of travelling to the Olympic Stadium on the opening night and merely stand outside soaking up the atmosphere and hopefully watching it on big screens (?)

Someone has told me that I won't be able to do this as I won't be able to even get near the satdium to just stand outside it without an Olympic park ticket? Is this correct?

  • Yes, that is correct. Stay at home and watch on tv - much more comfortable and no rain either!

I know that there a loads and loads of ads every where talking about park and ride, trains, you name it.

Shame as it sounds like a good idea but I guess they have their reasons, security etc.

you're right, you need an Olympic Park pass to get into the Olympic park (this is without access to any venue inside Olympic Park).

I believe there will be big screens round London showing the opening ceremony. There are screens in Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and Victoria Park. Could be a good atmosphere down there as well

Hyde Park has a concert event with highlights from the opening ceremony being shown. Victoria Park and Hyde Park are open on a first come first serve basis. My suggestion, get to Victoria Park early and watch it from their, your also next to Olympic Park so will be able to see the fireworks hopefully!

Lots of good events going on in Fish Island (next to stadium, nearest station hackney wick) you would get to see everything on TV but hear the crowd and see the fireworks. Wouldn't fancy trying to get home afterwards though.

I wouldn't recommend going near the stadium. You can't get into the village area without a ticket anyway.

I'm going to go to one of the big screen site's say at Hyde Park

there is formans closest venue to the Olympic stadium

    http://www.formans.co.uk/

Victoria park also very close by, you have to apply for the free tickets though

people getting home afterwards is going to be interesting, I thought Westfield was closing early that day but if its going to be restaurant goers and people in the stadium going home and people from Victoria park too...
