advice on dca charges

Hi,
I've posted briefly about this before, quick synopsis:
Lost job and defaulted on 2 payments with Egg. They weren't interested when I contacted them to tell them of my circumstances and passed debt immediately (£1700) to DLC. I agreed to pay £25/month. This was a year ago and I've kept up payments and received no further correspondence from DLC apart from messages on the answerphone recently to call them (which I didn't). Today I received a letter asking me to either increase payments or negotiate full & final settlement. I'm not really in a position to increase payments to the level they want but could possibly try for a !!!!!! (I've been reading the other threads!) if I get a decent amount off.
Anyway, point is (and I'm new to this, never defaulted before) - I've paid over £300... but they say the balance is now over £2k! I can appreciate they'll add their own interest but surely not that much, and without explanation?
Can I ask for a full breakdown of their charges before I negotiate? And more to the point, will they give me them? I'm happy to pay the debt off (at a rate I can afford) because I don't want any CCJs (I work in a court!) but this seems a bit underhand: they can just stick a random sum on and expect you to cough up without question or any written explanation or agreement?
I'm not sure how to proceed, any comments welcome, thanks in advance!!

Hi
I think you can ask for a full breakdown - after all, you've been paying them! Probably someone will have a template letter or a link to somewhere which has more advice on this!
