direct debit charges for your tv licence (watchdog)

did anyone watch watchdog tonight?

could someone clarify what they said about direct debit charges for the tv licence.

i thought they said if you pay for your tv licence by monthly direct debit they charge you an extra £5 a month but not if you pay annually or quarterley.

did i hear right?

    If you pay quarterly by direct debit, you get charged £1.25 a quarter = £5 per year. (Just got my licence out to check as I pay this way)

    Sorry .. you didn't.

    The extra admin charge is solely on quarterly payments. You just pay the flat rate on monthly / annual DDs.

    But you need to watch that monthly DDs require you pay in advance the first 6 months - and in arrears the last 6 months. And getting to that point (ie in advance) probably means your paying for the first licence in 6 monthly instalments.

    Thanks for the info - its always a nightmare trying to find the money to pay for the license. I should've looked into paying it by monthly instalments ages ago! Nice they don't charge extra for paying by monthly instalments,altho' of course we're paying 6 months in advance. Whatever, that's one less big amount of money I won't have to find in November :)
