Equidebt - 2001 Debt

Hi,
I am after some advice.
I received a letter from Equidebt over the weekend asking me to contact them. Upon contacting them they explained to me that they were trying to recover a debt in my name going back to 2001.
They are unable, however, to provide me with any details of the debt. They cannot reproduce the original credit agreement, they cannot provide me with the number of the account which incurred the debt and they cannot provide me with the address at which the debt is associated. Essentially, the only information they can provide is an amount that I have to pay them and the name of the store card which the original debt was associated with.
I have contacted the store card and they have no record of me ever holding an account with them - although they have noted that I would need to supply an account number for them to check thoroughly (which equidebt cannot provide).
This just doesn't sound right to me... Am I correct in thinking that if they cannot provide the information I have requested regarding the original debt then they have to grounds to claim it.
In closing, I dont want to sound like I am trying to get out of paying a debt that I may have incurred. It was 11 years ago and I just can't remember whether I am responsible or not.
Many Thanks

The standard letter that might suit you is the 'hybrid' one in the link to the standard letters (#5) - you don't recognise the debt but it would be statute barred on the information they have supplied.0
