Upping and moving with nowhere to go?

This will sound totally ridiculous and maybe it is but I really need to move elsewhere and find new a new place and new inspiration to the point even if it means sleeping on the streets.

Not sure what forum to put this in.

I am currently unemployed and on HB. I don't like the area I am living in and the chances of getting a job are pretty much zero. It's that bad.

If i moved to another city could i claim homelessness to the council and be put up in temp accommodation just like that?

Who knows how I will get on. I was even thinking of moving to London but have been told that will swallow me up.

Any ideas, not moving is not an option anymore, I have put up with this for too long and am going insane. Moved places a short while back so all my stuff is at parents, very little here.

Thanks.

If you really can't stand where you're living now, think about places you already know or do some research to find out about places where you stand at least a reasonable chance of finding a job you would like to do or be good at. Next step would be to find out if there's a YMCA or similar in the places on your list of would like to live in. I got a job in 1999 in Birmingham but didn't know where would be good area to live, I had seen the YWCA that was close to the Edgebaston Road so went there and they had spare flats available so I moved there. Met some great people. Had my independance but if I was having a bad day, there was always someone to talk to. Even if you're over 25, YMCA should still let you stay until you can find somewhere else.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with upping and going somewhere, recreating yourself and starting afresh.

There is, however, a huge amount wrong with not only deliberately making yourself homeless, but also thinking that sleeping rough is going to be an improvement from where you currently are.

I'm sorry to be brutal, but really DON'T DO IT!

If you really are desperate to move, and have nowhere to go, how about voluntary work overseas? Not only will you have a roof over your head, but you'll be doing something incredibly useful, and at the same time gaining skills and experience that can only help you job hunting when you return to the UK.

Yes the voluntary work sounds good to me. Do you have any suggestions as to where to look. I would definitely be interested in that. Even as you say if it's just a roof and food. You never know that could be the answer to me problems right now.

If you have somewhere to live now and just leave it to go some place else then that place has no obligation to house you a you are intentionally homeless.

You still have to raise some funds to do VSO and generate a fair bit in fundraising for the charity before you can do this. Also, you need a skill that they can use.

You could try volunteering in a different part of the UK for 6 months to a year. With CSV you'd just need to fund your travel to wherever they place you. Accomodation, daily living expenses, plus minimal 'pocket money' are usually fully funded: http://www.csv.org.uk/volunteering

Also if you are homeless the council still has no obligation to house you unless you are a vulnerable person in some way, for example under 18.

I'm sorry but I am becoming entirely confused as to what your problems that this might be the answer to are ?

Looking back through your posts this year you have talked about being homeless several times - once it was A4E's fault you were going to be homeless - and now you are talking about just upping and going somewhere, anywhere else.

A few days ago you were desperately keen to volunteer overseas until you realised that it wasn't a realistic proposal since you have no real skills to sell for this and cannot afford to pay towards it, and then you became utterly committed to teaching TEFL abroad.

Now a few days later you are upping sticks and becoming intentionally homeless because things might be better somewhere else, and "not moving isn't an option".

IBeing homeless doesn't make you more employable - it makes you less employable. And a new location doesn't mean that you will find it easier to get work - there are places that are worse hit by the current unemployment levels but there's nowhere that isn't bad right now, so what is this new place going to offer you?

Making erratic and irrational decisions isn't an answer to whatever your problems are. I am not sure what it is that you think you want, or why you want it, but acting on such impulses is not the answer, especially if those impulses are going to change every few days.

Not unless you move to Scotland or South Yorkshire or such. The most popular places have no council accommodation left and temporary usually means B&B. In my own authority, the waiting list for a council house has been in excess of a decade since the 1990's.
