Threshold on items imported from overseas for personal use - medicine

My son and his wife have arrived in London from US for one month on a last minute posting by his office. His wife needs some medication for a minor condition which she has been taking in US but which is not available here without prescription. She plans to buy on line from her usual source in the US and get it sent here.

What is maximum value you can import from outside the EU before tax/customs duty is applied? Does this limit apply to medicine?

(We asked if she could register for one month as a visitor/temporary resident with our GP and told no, their list is full. The meds she needs are not "emergency ones" - she is not ill. Just something she is taking at present for a minor condition, which she needs to keep on taking. )

£15, yes it aplies to medicines. You'll be charged VAT on the total of the goods PLUS the shipping charge and maybe duty as well if the goods are in a taxable class (most medicines are but you'll have to Google for the rate by drug type).

I'm surprised the GP did not offer a private consultation/prescription

Would there not be a problem with shipping in prescription drugs?

Our GP does not offer private treatment. D-i-l would be importing an antibiotic cream widely available over the counter in usa but only on prescription here.

It seems not as long as they are for personal use and not for resale.

Could she get a friend/neighbour to post them to her weekly?

Or get a UK private Doctor?
