I'm with RibenaBerry and Lynsajane on this one I'm afraid. I'm still with Fitness First, and have had a look again at the paperwork I signed a year ago. It is a MINIMUM 12 month contract, which then goes on to a rolling contract. You can give notice in the 11th month, to end the contract after the 12 months. But at any point you still have to give one months notice.

On an interesting point I know someone who works for the gym, and says that if everybody who had gym membership went to the gym at least once a week, they wouldn't be able to cope!

defo, we have five and a half thousand members, if they turned up on a regular basis we'd be !!!!!!ed! I was actually doing a job for my manager a month or so ago and realised there are folk who joined the club when it opened two and a half years ago and paid every month since, according to our systems they haven't been in once!

You can put your membership on hold which reduces the montly cost down to around £7. You could do this every month untill your year is up, but you have to give a full months notice before they will cancel your membership completley. This means a full month at your full montly cost.

Just tell them that your going traveling or something and tell them how long for (or how long you would like it frozen).

unfortunatly thought, the time your on suspension does not counts as part of your minimum contract, at least not in my club.
  • Hi All

I can't believe how many people have been conned by their gym getting more money on this whole cancellation point. I just wanted to clarify the whole position on the notification.

If you give the required amount of notice after the minium period, and you keep a copy of the letter and send it vai the postal service, wether the gym recived this notifaction or claim not to, and wether they say they did to confirm to you in writing that your gym membership, this is completely wrong, there is a legal precendant called the postal rule, which has been tested in numerous cases over the years, it basically means once the letter goes in the postbox, you have given notification. If you can give you gym a copy of the letter you do not need to be bullied into paying more membership fees.

Holmes place just tried to con me out of £324 for not having receiving my letter, however when I told them I had taken legal advice, from the whole firm of lawyers I work for, they seem to back off very quickly, and they have dropped all the outstanding membership fees! Its just a big con to get more money out of you.

Also you are well within your rights to cancel your gym membership at any period if your gym in unsafe
