Holiday allowance

Just started new job. Hurray!!!!! Its 26 hours a week and the holiday allowance is 20 days pro rata plus bank holidays. Can anybody tell me how many days holiday I get? At the risk of sounding thick I can't work it out. Many thanks:)

When does the holiday run from/till, might well follow the same path as the tax year.

I never even though to ask. I know that we have to save 5 days for the christmas shut down so I will guess it runs Jan to Dec. So please could you give me an idea how many days I will be allowed for the rest of this year and then how many days for next year/ Is there some sort of formula? many thanks

I am working and 5 and a half hours Monday to Thursday plus 4 hours Friday.

The full time workers are 7 and half hrs Mon to Thursday plus 4 hrs Friday.

And I think the holiday year is Jan to Dec.

    Your response is much appreciated.

Sorry but "think" doesn't work. People actually need to know the holiday year! Christmas closure doesn't tell us anything about when the holiday year is, and there are a lot of variations.

Thank you for your replies, I was hoping somebody would give me a math formula to work it out. I will check at work what the actual holiday year is.

    you need to ask them.

You should get the same days as full timers as you work 5 days

one way is you get 1/5 of those at 4 hours pay the rest are 5.5hrs.

ask how they do holidays and people can check if it is correct

if may be wrong for full timers

The way I work it out for my staff is:

    26 (hours) x 20 (days) divided by 5 = 104 hours per year leave

You then need to pro rata it. If you started on July 1st then you'll have 52 hours (10 days).

Thy may work it out differently so you'll need to check.

You really need to know when the holiday year starts and therefore how many bank holidays are going to come out of your entitlement before the next year starts.

If your written particulars do not include details of a "company holiday year" then everyone will have an individual holiday year running from the start of their employment with the company.

Because your work hours are not the same every day your holiday should really be worked out in hours so that if you took holiday on one of your "short" days, you don't lose out - nor the company lose out if you only took days off on "long" ones.

    Hi OP

You're right, you can be given a formula to work it out. :)

As your hours are not the same every day, the formula for you is:

    * Your weekly hours divided by full time hours
    * Multiply that by 190.4 (28 days leave 20 days AL plus 8 BHs - multiplied by average of daily hours)
    * This gives you your total hours paid leave

On a Friday you'd take 4 hours off the total when you're off work, obviously, and 5.5 for M-Th when you're off. The same for Bank Hols.

Find out when your leave year is. Then:

    * Work out the number of days left in your leave year (eg, July 16 to Dec 31)
    * Take that number and divide it by 365
    * Multiply that by your total hours paid leave for the whole year
    * This number is the hours' of paid leave (including BHs) that you have left this year

    HTH :)

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".
