Are Crumpsall and Eccles dangerous?

Essentially, I'm looking to move to the Manchester area in early 2013, and having had quite enough of the high rents in my current area, I'm looking to move somewhere inexpensive this time. I've noticed a good few studio flats in the above areas for less than £400 a month, and most don't look too bad on the inside or the outside. (I'm not looking for anything fancy; just somewhere without damp and vermin will do!) The thing is, I know appearances can be deceptive and I don't want to be at high risk of being attacked when walking home from the bus stop... I've spent most of my life in working-class areas but I've generally not had much trouble in them, and wouldn't want that to change. Does anyone have any experience of the M8 or M30 areas (quite far apart, I know)? Thanks :)

My sister lives in Monton in Eccles and has done for years. There is very little trouble where she lives. She says that Monton has a village like feel to it, and is quite happy there. She isn't as keen on the secondary schools, although the primary was fine, so her children go further afield to school.

Thanks - I've had a look to see what there is there, and the prices don't look that bad, but there don't seem to be too many properties to let there at the moment. Schools aren't really a problem for me as I'm single and childless... unless there's a really rough one near me that has pupils throwing things at passers-by at chucking out time! ;)

    Hi Charlotte,

I live in Eccles and work in Crumpsall, so I hope I'm able to help!

I moved here five years ago from London and love it. Eccles is quite a big town, it used to have its own council. Like any large town, then, there are good bits and bad bits. Most of them are good though!

I live in Monton too, and it's gorgeous. Lots of nice places to eat and drink and some good shops. Eccles town centre itself is a wee bit dodgy in that the pubs aren't somewhere you'd go drinking unless you are very very hard. So I'd avoid there if you can.

Good luck with the move! :j

Im moved to Eccles 3yrs ago from somerset.
there area has a worse name than it actually is, its like anywhere takes yrs to get a good rep and minutes to lose it . Theres a few numpties and i 2nd the above about the pubs, there rather dingy and scally like.
But round the corner you have worsley and urmston for drinks etc.
Monton is the expensive part of eccles (Ellesmerepark).
I ended up buying a 3 bed semi as was less than a two bed flat to rent by £25ish but.......needed complete renovation and i didnt mind that. Its ok here
  • Ladywell apartments are nice and not far from eccles. only a short 5min walk away. Cheap too, alot less that your 400£ budget, although youd be looking at a 2bed apartment share.
