Hello all,
I have been shortlisted for an interview next Tuesday in the morning. The problem is I received the letter today so I couldn't book Tuesday as leave.
I was recently very ill and I had also been booked off work for stress. I don't want to take the day as a sick day as it would be dishones and unpaid.
My job is in a shambles right now and I really want to go to the interview. Perhaps someone has a few thoughts PLEASE.

Could your current employer actually cope OK if you arrived later in the day next Tuesday?
If so, could you say you had some important private business to attend to but that you would make up the time - even starting to build up your hours from Thursday onwards.
That would obviously depend on the type of work you do.
You wouldn't have to specify what the private business was, just that it was "private" and let them draw their own conclusions.0 -
If you cannot arrange a day's holiday and don't want to take unpaid leave then you are stuck for choices - you need to make a tough decision.
How long is the interview likely to last? Could you 'invent' a dentist appointment that would last the same amount of time or would you feel that was dishonest as well.
Sorry if I sound blunt but there isn't an easy way out of this one.
Good luck, whatever you do.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -
I work half day on a Tuesday and I have very limited childcare for my 3 year old. The childminder is packing it in next week then I'm not to sure what will happen from April. I thought about taking that morning off and making it up on the Wednesday but I don't have the childcare. Thanks for the tip though.

ask the interviewer if they can move the time or day. I've done this for my last two interviews, they understand that people can't always make it during working hours.0

angeldeelite....I asked for an afternoon slot on the same day or just another day altogether....but they said the interviews are only being held on Tuesday morning....still not to sure how to get out of work for this one.

What will happen if you tell your boss you have an interview you need to go to?0

Daisies, I don't know what will happen. I'm in the middle of changing offices (had a grievance against my boss), but I have to keep my job until I get something else. I don't want them to know why I need to have the time off.

Have you any idea how long the interview lasts? Think I would go down the dentists route if I was you as you'll regret not going to the interview. I've been to interviews in the past where I've had to take a full day off and either didn't end up liking the company or didn't get the job, but it's just something you've got to do until you find something you are happy with I guess. IMHO, don't think telling the boss you are going for a interview is a good thing!0

Could you use the need to find childcare next month as a reason for not being there on Tuesday next week? After all you do need to find the childcare for April even if you are staying with the current company - it would be in their interest for you to find the childcare otherwise you can't work for them.0
