To be honest, unless you have some kind of relevant health issue, I really don't see the problem in having to get up at 5am. Lots of people who commute do this every day. Your new employer is asking you to do it as a one off. I think you are seeing problems that don't really exist.

Agreed. I'm regularly up at 5 during the week, so I can drop my OH at work for 6.30 and set off on my 27 mile commute. It's no great hardship and shouldn't be a major problem for a one-off training course.

The course is job specific so I know I have to attend.

I honestly don't want to put myself in an awkward position and I understand that it's a new job and I'm not wanting to put a black mark against myself at all.

My car is reliable and will do the 200 miles no problem and I have thought about going there the night before if I can get a Travelodge or similar for a reasonable cost and I've also thought about asking if they would consider paying, however, that will bump the overall cost up, making it even less cost effective. I hadn't thought about a subsistance allowanc but I doubt very much if they will pay. I know I have to take my own lunch to the venue.

I may ask if they will cover the cost of the taxi to the station (around £5) and get the train as it will be around £60 instead of the £100 if I drive. I would still have to get up very early but I won't be as tired by going on the train. I'd have to look at getting from the train station to the venue & back or if it's within walking distance that would still allow me to get there on time.

Thanks for the opinions, much appreciated.
Against a 15 hour day, overnight accommodation on expenses is a reasonable ask.

Thanks, I will get about £85 back in expenses if I drive and there's no way my petrol will even cost me half that so I could get a Travelodge stay for around £35 and still come out a few quid on top.

I know I have to attend and I do realise that a one off getting up at 5am isn't unreasonable, I'm just not used to it, I don't have to get up until 7am and have only a 10 minute drive to work so it's me just being a bit lazy if nothing else :D I do know though as well that come midday, I'll be flagging and I just feel that I'll learn better if I'm less tired. Thanks for all the opinions, I appreciate them.

I used to have meetings like this, a few times a year, same travel distance and timings etc. DD was 2, so would stay over at my mums. Once she was in bed at 7, I would leave at about 8 and drive up and stay in a Travel lodge a mile away.

Decision made: I will drive to there the night before, I've booked a Travelodge, attend the course then drive home afterwards.

What I will be able to claim in expenses will more than cover the cost of my petrol & my overnight stay, it will probably include a reasonable priced dinner and a bit of breakfast; at worst, I'll break even.

Thanks for your thoughts and opinions, it really helped me decide what to do :)

I refrained as my post was personal until you had made your decision. My OH gets up at 5am and works 18 hours on average during (none work at home days). never claims time back or expenses, other than direct travel, no subsistence etc. Part of the job - week in and week out. BUT he gets a very high salary.

As long as not taking the pee out of you, showing willing in the long run isn't really a bad thing IMO

Good luck and here is hoping for a sucessful career ahead of you.
