what job to take

I'm loosing sleep over this one.

I've worked for this company since Nov 2003. Taken on as an accounts administrator doing 35 hr week, 25 days hols, salary is presently £14,850.
I arranged my hours 8-5 mon to thurs and 9-12 fridays

The problem is although its a pretty cushty job, not stressful at all, its awful.
There is only enough work to keep me occupied one day a week, the rest of the time I am bored stupid. Despite asking for more to do , there is nothing. One of the directors has said he is retiring, but he has been saying that for 18 months. The other director keeps saying when the retirement happens my role will change drastically (whether i get a wage that reflects that is another thing) and there will be plenty to do. The other problem is their attitiude.
They place no value in anything I do, Ive never had a word of thanks out of them. I am the only office employee, just me and the 2 directors in the office, I do EVERYTHING accounts, admin, secretary, PA. I am a second class employee compared to the engineers who they seem terrified of upsetting. I am a member of a union and consulting them, I have had 3 occaisions for a greivence over the years. I havent pursued them because I know life here would be hell. Because I have nothing to do, the younger director has said to finish at 4pm each day instead of 5pm ( i dont loose any money) reducing my hours to 31. I can also not bother coming in fridays, but I will loose those 3 hrs at £8.16 an hour.

So, Ive been job hunting and have been for 4 interviews and been offered 2 of the jobs. One turned out to be a pittence for a 40 hr week so I said no.

The other is again, accounts / admin for a small company. I was in a bit of a rash mood so when they told me it was a 40 hr week at the interview I told them I was only interested in a 30-35 hrweek. They have come back with a 35.5 hr week, i keep my 12 finish on fridays and its a few hundred more a year. So why arent I jumping up and down? its less holidays, only 20 days. I already have 2 holidays booked this year which will use up all the days at the new place.

(nearly finished)

I dont know wether to hang on and see if things pick up or head for pastures new

Job 1 Job 2

Hrs Offically 35 35.5
Actually 31

Wage 14850 15229
(8.16 per hr) (8.25 per hr)

Hols 25 20

am I just a whiney old bint who should count her blessings.

If I were you I'd go for the new job. It sounds like they're prepared to accommodate you with the different hours, which might be a sign they'd be better to work for? And it doesn't sound like things are likely to improve at your current place, as you've been waiting for that to happen already!!

Ultimately, you may well be better off with Job no 2.
A stay of 3.5 years with Company 1 is not too short. Depending on your age, it may even be rather long - though if you can show that your responsibilities increased in that time, then fine.
However, it looks to me as though you would actually be moving to Company 2 and accepting a pay cut in your actual hourly rate for hours worked.

It sounds a bit like out of the frying pan and into the fire! As things are very slow where you work at present, couldn't you use your time to gain new skills/ qualifications so that when you move you can make a major jump rather than just a sideways move? If it's an easy life you want, stay in your current job but direct your energies into preparations for the future.
  • I'd sit with Oldernotwiser on this one. Use your 'spare' time at work with your current employer to boost your qualifications. This would be a useful addition to your cv and may help you find a higher caliber job.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do

If you're not jumping up and down shouting Yippee new job, more money too, then it's not the right move for you.

You need to think through exactly what you would miss with your current job.And really, if it is as quiet as that, you could be using the spare time to upskilling yourself, as Triker says. You could ask the company to pay for a distance learning qualification for you - this would add value to your role and enable you 'to prepare for when the director leaves and my role will change'.

The other thing that you could also do is to think about improvements to the company in general. You must know a lot about the whole business by now - if you could set yourself a project to examine one particular aspect of it, I bet you could think of ways it could be organised or managed better, or how costs could be cut. That would increase your value in the eyes of your employers and you'd also learn a lot from it.

    Thanks every one.

That is one thing I hadnt thought of, seeing if I could do a course during the week. I can only ask....

Ive pretty much administrated / organised / stream lined everything to death which is why I've got a bit more time on my hands.

    Try https://www.vision2learn.com.
They have free online courses which include NVQ qualifications - your employer would only need to allow an assessor to visit you about 3 times at work.
