Credit reference agencies triggering calls?

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of this.

To cut a long story short, I had an alleged debt with a bank which I successfully disputed and the bank gave up. However, it had already been sold on to many different companies who each registered defaults, even though I told them it was disputed. I couldn't be bothered fighting them, I just decided to wait the 6 years for things to drop off my credit report.

I haven't applied for anything for three years and have heard not a peep but with the recent RBS Group problems, I decided to open an account with Nationwide for future financial security.

Within 48 hours I was getting calls from two of the companies who were pursuing me all those years ago and another new company who I've never heard of. I don't have any other debts at all and like I said, have not opened or applied for anything for three years, so I know it is in relation to this ancient alleged debt.

Coincidence or are the reference agencies notifying people of my recent application?

    Hi Jen,

There must be some kind of link, as I applied for a copy of my credit file and within weeks was being called about an outstanding debt, that like you, I'd heard nothing about for years. My home phone is ex directory and they hadn't my new mobile number until then, so I'd definitely say the number came from the credit reference agency.
If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.
