Bored with construction work...

I have been in the building game since leaving school, I am now 26 and really want to get into something different but don't know where to start.

I have a mortgage and my wife is at home looking after our first baby so it is difficult for me to get into something different as I am the only one paying the bills at the moment!

I realise I am lucky to even be in work but I would love a new role which means I can use my brain more. I have around £10k saved in the bank so I could use some of that to start training for something else but would love to hear some ideas from this site which usually proves very helpful.

I am good at dealing with people and can help with problems and so on. I love giving advice such as money (probably due to this site more than anything else) and would love some sort of advisor position in the future. I know I haven't given much to go on but in all honesty construction is the only trade I have known since I started work.

I am good with computers and did well at school in IT, English and maths. I have realised recently that the thought of doing manual work the rest of my life is quite depressing.

Any advice as to which direction I could head would be greatly received. Thanks

What does that mean in practical terms?

Your current skills and experience will be far more help to us answering this question than what you did at school 10 years ago.

But, as a starting point, and with no idea of what you currently do:

If/when the construction industry ever gets its backside back off the ground there is plenty of scope within it to move 'off the tools' - either at an operational level (Site Manager / CDM Co-Ordinator / H&S Advisor etc), or how about a training role which would utilise your advisory skills (basic skills training / plant training / NVQ Assessor / confined space training / NRSWA training etc)?

What about a project worker for places which do up houses for homeless people.There are two such projects in my city. The projects work with the clients to get a property liveable and the clients/volunteers learn carpentry/building skills etc.
All the actual workers have a building/carpentry background. You could look into doing PTTLLS if you were interested. This is a teaching qualification for those who work with adults.

Hello,

I install air conditioning but have also done electrical work (but only up to NVQ Level 2) and also bricklaying but that was for a short spell.

I know I haven't given much to go on but I really don't know much about anything away from building work, sad as that sounds!

Doesn't sound sad at all ironman. There's a lot of people in office training type jobs who'd love 10k in the bank. What about aiming for progression within construction especially in a training capacity. You could always volunteer for the cab on the side and see where that ends up.

Yeah I am happy to have some money in the bank but would honestly swap that for a career where I could move forward and feel half decent about going to work!

I have been advised to see if an agency can help me, does anyone recommend that?

i'd say possibly further education teaching as then you can pass on the knowledge and skills to others

Thanks for the replies, have applied for computer based jobs as I have a little bit of experience in this. Not sure if I will get far but it's worth a try!
