Claiming Back VAT when working from home

Hello!

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere but I couldn't find anything.

In my current job I work from home a lot and use my own PC, I am thinking about upgrading it and wondered if there was any way I could claim back the VAT as I am using it for work.

Any help would be appriciated.

Cheers

No, you have to be a vat registered business to be able to reclaim the VAT. What you could do is negotiate with your employer. Let them buy the computer on your behalf, and get the VAT refund and tax relief - then they reduce your salary slightly to pay for it over say a year, meaning you save income tax and NIC and your employer also saves employers NIC. This is a standard tax planning strategy called salary sacrifice.

Thanks WHA, my employer do offer a IT at home scheme but you can only buy a whole PC from one selected supplier which is expensive anyway.

    Cheers
