Use my Field to make some cash!!

Hi all,
dont know if this is the right area of the forum or not but here we go anyway.

I have been left a field in N.ireland. Its pretty big but has no planning permission for building (sadly).

It is basically just sitting there at the moment although someone is grazing horses on it at present (they dont pay, but they look after the field).

It seems like a bit of a waste so I would like some ideas of how best to make some money from this piece of land.

We are thinking about using it for car boot sales (once a month) if we can get the required permissions as this would also fit in with our working/familiy lives in Surrey!!

We cant be in NI for more than a few days each month, but we do have some friends there who could help out with the running of the day if we went down the "car boot" road...??

Anyway, anyone else have any bright ideas about how we can use this space to make a bit of extra money without needing to be present all the time?

The other thing we have considered is letting travellers site on the land in a temporary/semi-permanent way but it is almost impossible to find out how to go about this. There are lots of "static traveller sites" in Surrey but these appear to belong to "travellers" who own a bit of land, let everyone site static trailers on it and take rent...there doesnt seem to be any planning permission or tax/bookkeeping as such though I doubt I could get away with being so cavalier!!??

Any thoughts!!

Regards and thanks!!

Can you not let it for hay/Silage grazing? If you want anything destroyed a sure fire way is to let Travelers near it

do not let travellers on the field - firstly they won't pay you, secondly the neighbours will hate you, and thirdly you'll never get rid of them.
How big is the field? Agricultural land is selling for around 6k an acre I think, or if you rent it out expect aroun £100 per acre per year. Whereabouts is it?

the value of the land for renting all depends on its location relative to neighbouring farms

The poster is too vague about size, condition of land, location etc to make any constructive comments here
  • Thanks for the responses.

I come from an area heavily populated with travellers. I dont really sign up to the idea of persecuting any group of people based on social or ethnic grouping. I would rather make a few quid off people who need a place to stay than see my tax money wasted clearing the many "transient sites" time and time again. I am quite used to dealing with travellers so this wouldnt be anything new to me...

Anyway, I like the idea of Christmas trees - would have to look into the market and competition locally, but its a pretty good idea!!

Cant be more specific about the land as I have not visited it yet!! Have only seen the plans - wanted some ideas before heading off over to view it for the first time!!

    Thanks all!
  • you are bound to know what town, county etc its in????
  • nadnad, how rude. The only thing i am hoping to provoke is reasonable suggestions about how to use a grazing field that i has just been left to me in Downpatrick, Co.Down.

I shared the couple of thoughts that I had and hoped that i might get a couple of other thoughts to keep in mind when I go to see the piece of land in question.

Not really bothered by political/social/demographical views/observations. Just want to try and make use of my newly aquired field...

Any helpful suggestions would be welcomed...
