Anybody better value than 77 Diamonds? Engagement Ring hunt!

Hi all.

Looking to get an engagement ring for my girlfriend. Aiming to prupose in September.

I need some help urgently. I'm due to go to 77 Diamonds in London on the 20th for an appointment. I'm hoping somebody can help me to find a competitor for this company. So far I haven't managed to find anybody that comes close to the value for money that they offer.

Any body know any better?

It doesn't have to be in London, but I would like to be able to at least compare their prices against something. All the other websites I have checked are a lot more expensive than they are. Which is why I believe they're good value.

Thanks for your help.

  • We've used Taylor & Co (http://taylormaderings.co.uk/) for our wedding rings. They come to you, or you can find them at wedding fairs. I can't vouch for the finished article, but I've found them good value.

My engagement ring was from 77Diamonds and I can't fault either the product or the service. They delivered within 3 days of the order, right before Xmas (ring arrived 23rd Dec). I LOVE it and it still looks great almost three years on (Platinum Ballerina style with just over 2/3 carat Round Brilliant diamond)

Other (online) companies that we were recommended were Blue Nile & The Beautiful Company (wedding rings bought from here, but they're just plain Platinum bands so I can't vouch for anything else)

This sounds pretty much exactly what we'll be going for.

Did you manage to find any body that rivalled them for price?

So why didn't you stick with 77D for the actual wedding rings? Don't they do them?

77D were cheapest. We bought online as I used to work with diamonds so pretty confident about my understanding of the 4C's and I didn't mind buying "blind" as I'd seen & tried on an identical ring in a High St jeweller and fallen in love with the design (but it was white gold, more expensive and smaller stone :rotfl: ).

The day after placing the order, the guy called and said the stone we'd picked had quite an obvious black flaw and offered a different stone with less obvious inclusions for the same price - I was pleased at that, as buying without seeing meant I had no idea of what the inclusions were, only that it was VS1. In the end, my stone has "white bubbles" which are not visible to the naked eye as the stone has been set so that they don't impact on the refraction of light.

We went with Beautiful Co for the wedding rings as 77 Diamonds don't do Palladium, which is what my OH wanted. They were also very slightly cheaper for my 2.5mm plain Platinum court.

You could try Samara James. I had thought they were more expensive than 77D from their website, but if you talk to them in person they can deviate from their default G-VS1 line and do a more personal search for something that may meet your requirements. Particularly important when taking a flyer on diamonds with less clarity (eg SI1) as it's better if someone is ensuring they are eye clean for you.

I went with them as a comparison, not expecting to use them. Bu was very impressed with the service I received, and thought the end price was fair and the diamond beautiful.

They are south west of london, within M25, only really accessible if you are driving to london.

If buying from 77 diamonds, as I intend to. Do any of you think it would be even worth asking if I can get a better price if I pay cash? Or is that just plain cheeky and not going to go down very well??

    Thanks!

I don't know about that particular store, but being cheeky never hurt anyone! We got a good discount on my engagement ring just by asking if it made a difference if 'we buy it today'. You'll never see the shop staff again, so no harm in asking!

Just ordered my engagement ring a few days ago, got it from Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter (maybe a bit far if you're around the London area). Got a Platinum set ring with a larger diamond in the center and smaller diamonds on the shoulders - just over a carat - for about £1000 less than more mainstream or high street places, plus I got to pick the actual diamond to be set as the center stone. Well worth a visit if you're even in the area!
