^ So that is the stuff in Xmas Mince Pies not the meat versions?0

So there is no actual meat in them at all then?
So it is not actually mince-MEAT at all?
No, there is no meat in it.
It's called mincemeat because it originates from the 15th century, at which point it was indeed made from a mixture of meats and fruits that were used to fill pies. The recipe has altered as years have gone by, and since about the 19th century, it typically hasn't contained meat. Some types do still have some form of animal fat or suet in them, but a lot are now vegetarian and use vegetable fats instead. For example, the Robertson's one posted here uses vegetable suet, and it's other ingredients are largely fruits and spices (apples, raisins, sultanas, currants, orange & lemon peel, cinnamon, coriander, dill, cloves, ginger, nutmeg).0 -
Shelf full with this at the folkestone branch of tesco today. Bought 6 with sell by date of 2015. It will be like christmas in our house in july. Must also use up my bargain sausagemeat from waitrose at christmas and make some sausage rolls.0

Can I be cheeky and ask where you are all finding the jars of mincemeat? Ive looked and asked in tesco and asda, and have gone round in circles between the baking things and jams! (even the staff dont seem to know, as its a seasonal item there doesnt seem to be a 'regular' shelf spot for it!)
There is a fabulous recipe for the best pastry ever somewhere on MSE, I must try and find it and put a link here, it uses trex, and is very sweet and crumbly!
here it is...
