Meaningful but inexpensive keepsake for DD's 21st

Hi all

Eldest DD is 21 at the end of the month and her main 'present' from us is money towards a trip away with friends later in the year. I would however like to get her something meaningful to keep but don't want to spend a fortune on it.

I did a photo montage for her 18th so that idea has been used. I've seen 21 glasses etc but they are all a bit 'tacky' and having got several from my 21st still in my parents loft know they aren't really 'treasured'.

So over to you, clever people of MSE for any brilliant ideas please :D

How about a "Dear Daughter from me to you" book. You can track one down using google. These books have pages with some directions at the top, something like how i met your dad or how I felt when I was having you. These books are gorgeous and they can be personalised to include as much or as little as you want.

A Thomas sabo charm bracelet, the bracelets are only £19.95 and then can be filled on later occasions.

This might sound silly but my mum got me a tiara! It's very similar to this one by Jon Richard, http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_37484+JRTA000039_-1?breadcrumb=Home~txttiara and she said that if/when I get married I can wear it then. I did actually end up wearing it to an evening ball that I went to but I am saving it to wear if I get married. So it's not really meaningful now but it will be in the future...

You could wrap a small, pretty box, and tie on some thin, proper "baby" ribbon (the sort that they use for hanging loops on clothes now...get a good quality one) and attach a label that reads:

    I took an ordinary box
    As empty as can be
I filled it with a special gift
    And wrapped it carefully.

But please don't ever open it
    Just leave the ribbon tied
And hold it tightly near your heart
Because my love for you's inside!

    Hi,

For a friend a few years ago, who was 21 I did the following:

I got a very nice white wooden chest decorated with black flowers it had 3 drawers.

In the drawers I wrapped little gifts with numbers on, 1 - 21, with a letter on each of them also, and I wrote the following poem.

Start at the bottom and go upto the top
Put the numbers in order until you see stop
Each number has with it a letter of the alphabet
Arrange them and a special birthday message you will get

My message was: "Happy Birthday Princess"

Number 21 was the main present which could be your money gift to her. (Mine wouln't fit into the chest so this was wrapped seperately.

In the chest I put things like a small mirror, nail polish etc also a pack of jelly tots as we used to say: "Love you lots like jelly tots" so perhaps your DDs favorite sweets as a child etc.

It really was received so well and I was very proud ot it when I had done it :-)

I think it was one of my most thoughtful presents and all my own idea, I had such fun doing it and it was a challenge to find such small gifts to fit the chest.

You could perhaps play about with the 21 letters to say a different message.

    I hope you're DD has a fab 21st.

Ps the items don't have to be expensive either :-) it more the thought that goes into them.
Cherish the ones you love and travel back on the road that brings you home :)

  • When I was 16 my mum made me a cd of music that we love or from films I love, songa that have memories for us.

When I was 18 My mum got me a box that said the same that it held her love and that I wasn't to open but I opened it and it had a penny or lucky stone in it she bought it from a store on ebay she told me after.

When I was 21 they bought be a bottle of champagne and 4 champagne glasses because my mum said what use was 1 special glass because you'd have no one to share it with.
