Yes, everyone makes mistakes. Not everyone steals a car and drives without insurance though, both of which are crimes.

I thought this site was for helping people. I made a huge mistake, but now I want to do what I can to make ammends.

HOnestly, is that what you want as your posts suggest you are trying to get out of this. There is nothing anyone on here can say to you, what exactly are you expecting people to say?

This will not go away, your sister will come home and find the damaged car, what exactly are you going to say- think about it carefully. Are you going to admit to doing it, or are you going to lie and say the car was stolen, then the tyre was changed and the car returned. Also you mention you phoned someone to get you before you attempted to drive home, was that a breakdown service, if so they already know about you.

I honestly can't think what you are expecting people to say here. Your poor sister has worked hard to achieve somehting, not many 20 year olds have a nice car- yet you seem almost proud of having spoilt it all for her. If you were my son (and I love my boys dearly) I would turn you into the police the moment you tried to lie about it.

You have probably just lost the sympathy (if you ever had any) from most users reading this. How dare you snipe at someone who is working to get on track when it is something you yourself seem unable to even contemplate.

TWOC, no insurance, fail to report, careless driving.

What if the police come knocking the door for your sister before she returns?

    Had you been drinking?

Assuming she does have Insurance, it's hard to tell how much it will put it up, but it will be a fairly substantial amount that assuming they cover it which there's a very good chance they won't. They will however have to pay any valid claims to third parties (Anyone apart from you and your sister). Any payments they make to third parties they will come after you for.

If your friends were not aware the car was stolen, then they have three years (Even longer if they're under 18) to claim for injuries. If they were injured, there's a good chance they will claim at some time in the future and especially if you ever fall out with them.

Should they make a successful claim that someone else pays out eg the Insurer or the MIB. Then ultimately they will come after you for payment plus their legal costs which is likely to be quite some time in the future, often when you least expect it and hopefully when you're working.

If you're damaged the road furniture and they work out it was you or your sisters car eg the bollard, the council or highways agency may come after you or your sisters Insurers for payment and these things are a lot more expensive than you imagine to replace. Again if your sisters Insurers pay for the repairs they will come after you for payment.

Insurers and the MIB are very good at getting money out of people, they have six years to pursue the money.

If I was in your position, I would try my very very hardest to find a job, any type of job just so when your family get back it shows you have some remorse. It will lighten the b0££icking they give you a little.

As I said before there's a very good chance at age 20 your sister is with an Insurer that exclude paying for damage to the car when taken by a family member. Quite a few Insurers do this because of family members doing what you're done

Actually , reading the other threads you have started I am beginning to think there is more to this than it appears.

You seem to have made a bit of a mess of things for yourself, whilst your sister has done well- I do hope that destroying her car isn't some form of jealous act. Maybe you didn't even do it consciously, but I do have a worry that you resent not being as succesful as your sister.

I won't quote any of the other threads, but it doesn't paint a good picture at all especially starting this thread suggesting you want to leave your sister in an extremely unpleasant and upsetting situation.

dacouch makes some very valid points, and has a knack of leaving emotions out of it, something I have failed to do in my own responses.

Whatever happens I hope you learn a massive lesson from this. See my post about my brother who was hit by an uninsured driver and the mess he has to sort out now for other peoples ignorance and selfishness that stops them buying insurance.

If you were my relative, irrelevant of brother or cousin, I'd make sure you pay. If I have worked hard to buy a car, get my no claims up and I am paying cost after cost on that car, and my brother took that without permission, drove it without insurance and then damaged it, I'd make sure he faced the full consequences of his actions because to me my brother should respect me and my property more than anyone else...

    Good luck

You need to see your sister ok and talk her into not reporting you. Thats the number 1 priority.

Failing that, you need to see your sister ok / arrange to see your sister ok before you go up to court.

I'm aware of someone that done this years ago. Paid the damage off before court, 7 points for the unlawful taking, 7 for no insurance, none for leaving the scene and no ban (different offences at the same time apparently)
Cant remember fine amount, so couldnt have been much.

Just make sure you see your sister ok. And grow up ;).

I don't want a criminal record though, and I'm sure my parents don't want that for me.

Technically you are already a criminal, and I'm sure your parents didn't want that for you either.

Are you saying they would prefer a son who lies and causes his sister a great deal of stress and money?

So what exactly is your cunning plan for getting out of this?
