Half Day Holidays

Hi,

I have heard some rumours where I work that the boss is going to ban us from taking half day holidays.. are they allowed to do this? I can't seem to find any info about this on the internet...

Thanks

They probably can. Legally they can tell you when to use your holiday time, so its more than possible to bring in a ban on half days. Though I'd find it a little at odds if they also had a policy saying you needed to use leave to see a GP, but ultimately its their choice I suppose. Unless your contract specifically states you can take half days.

Hi, thanks for the info... theres nothing in our contracts about how and when holidays can be taken currently..

I do have rather an unpleasant boss who does indeed ask us to use our holiday entitlement for doctors/dentist/hospital appointments so not sure how this will work either if we are not allowed to take half days..

You will probably have to take a full day. If the employer wants to they can dictate to you when to take your holidays without you having a say in the matter.

Sorry, they can do this - as others have said, they can dictate your holiday anyway, so yes, they can ban half days.

You may, subject to conditions, successfully argue custom and practice with this one. I wouldn't be too quick to fold.

They could just enforce it with notice if it was challenged. :)

I would like to believe the workforce were reactive to managements posturing and reacted accordingly and while challenging decisions, maintain the status quo.

Hmmm...... sickness.. probably not, everybody is too scared to take time off sick even if they are really ill.....
I had laryngitis once, looked like death warmed up could barely speak as my voice was so hoarse and painful and when I came back from one day sick my boss said
"what was wrong with you again?"

Nobody challenges here either, people that challenge end up getting sacked!
