I first read that as "next door's cat" and wondered how much warmth such a blaze could give off and for how long.
  • An EMP attack is, probably, the worse kind of attack to cope with.

No water, gas or electricity supply, no telephones (land-line or mobile), no television or radio (including personal two way radios) or computers, hardly any vehicles still operating, but still the entire population (with the possible exception of those fitted with Pacemakers) to feed and care for.

"Russia Is Cooking With Gas In Cyprus

    Updated: 2:25pm UK, Monday 18 March 2013
By Tim Marshall, Foreign Affairs Editor

The Russians have made Cyprus an offer it can refuse, but only if the EU throws more money at the problem.
Gazprom, the world’s largest extractor of natural gas has offered to bail out the Bank of Cyprus in return for effective exclusive control of the gas reserves off the coast of the island.
This would mean Cyprus does not need to accept the terms of the EU bailout offer.
The Cypriot government’s motives are obvious - it can leverage the Russian offer into getting a better deal from the EU to try and placate its furious voters.
The motives of the EU are obvious. To keep Cyprus inside the Eurozone in order to save the euro.
And the Russians? Well their motives are also clear…"

:D You could buy a steel shipping container, pay someone with a JCB to dig a hole and bury it and you'd have an instant [STRIKE]coffin[/STRIKE] ooops! I meant Faraday cage, of course.....:D

I have my docs saved to a thumbdrive which is sealed in a tin and thus EMP-proof. Not that this will do much good when the rest of the infrastructure fries in either another Carrington Event or a human-induced EMP (i.e. a b0mb).

I have reviewed the global situation, and made the following carefully considered responses; added 5 FB pies and 5 tins of mackerel to the stash and am planning to dig out my really big knife (bushcraft for the practising of, option on mayhem if zombies or stray ToryDems are sighted on my manor).

Oh, and another 6 litres of water and some more matches. Now must go and hide them somewhere...........:rotfl:

  • Wilkinsons have been selling all of their fire accessories at half price so we now have a firegrate, ash pan, coal scuttle, coal shovel, companion set, fire guard and log holder all for less than £35, DH has all full set of chimney brushes, so even if we can't afford the multi-fuel stove this year we can still open up the fireplace.
Our garden centre does a gallon of paraffin for £4.99
And I have ordered some of those hurricane lamps thanks for that bedsit bob.
I think that the situation in Cyprus is disgraceful and that the whole world economy is a house of cards teetering on falling.
We are thinking of buying an extra 200 litre water butt just to use for drinking water and safely tuck it away in the shed, we already have two for garden use.

Coal shovels are the best thing to put in the boot of your car - instead of a snow shovel with a long handle

:)WCS, I do admire you attitude, and your determination to soldier on under difficult circumstances. My previous work would be also classified as third sector and I would certainly still be in it bar cuts to funding.

One thing the parents are doing is when taps need to be replaced (and they don't last long these days, do they?) they're moving over to lever taps. These are so much better particularly if you have arthritis. Not wishing your taps turn up their washers, just mebbe something to consider when a replacement is on the cards. Parents' place is now down to just cross-headed taps in the handwash basin in the shower room.

I've been giving some thought to a bail out in a real grade A emergency. The kind of situation which would make it very dangerous to be a lone female in a city centre.

I can drive and have lots of experience driving vans. My course of action will be to have a high speed bug out plan and my regular car/ van rental place on speed dial. I have started to purchase insulated bags from c.s. when I see them in immaculate condition going cheep-cheep. These are strong and have zippers and handles, and will hold things very compactly and offer protection against bumps. Cans ain't as strong as they used to was, I have noticed.

I intend to have my food supplies bagged, as much as possible, and each bag to contain a mixture of food types. The idea is that a get-out could be done very quickly by getting a rental and throwing stuff into the back of it and heading across the county to rendezvous with the aged parents and the strapping great kid bruv.

;) And, the plus side is that I wouldn't have to dust my tins..... Joking aside, if things got very bad, there would be a window of opportunity and the prepared peeps may be heading out of town rather than rushing into the supermarkets to fight tooth and nail for the last tin of baked beans.

Heh, I'm on Radio 4 and they're discussing what might happen if the Cyprus issue was to be attempted here..........

And the computer, with which you will open the documents (and the printer with which you will print said documents), is where?
