    Pops,

I sure hope I don't get my reward later, they will have the hottest seat reserved for me if that's the case. Forget the thermals I'll need fireproof underwear in the afterlife.
  • Just curious.

Does anyone, on here, have the skills and experience, to hunt/trap, kill, draw and butcher their own meat?

:) I've done a bushcraft course and can dress out a woodpigeon (or other game bird) barehanded in under a minute.

If you're un-squeamish, I can post the technique.

I've hunted pheasants with a Ford Fiesta but not sure if that qulaifies......... have seen a bunny prepped from fur to the pot but that was many moons ago and not sure that I could do it from memory.

Can't trap, but I'm not a bad shot and could manage a 12 bore if I got my stance right in my youth, haven't shot for years so probably need a 20 gauge these days and someone behind me to catch me when it takes me off me feet! LOL.

Can draw and dress most birds and can skin and gut a rabbit, nothing bigger than that in my repertoire sorry.

    I've done it myself.

Personally, I prefer the nick and strip method.

I've shot small game, trapped rabbit, butchered those as well as deer, lamb and pigs. I've never tackled a whole beef carcass but have butchered hind quarters (doubt I could lift one now let alone throw it around a cutting table) I'm seriously rusty as its been a quite a few years since I've done any of that or for that matter boned out a cured side of pig and turned it into various bacon/ham cuts. I had planned on making my own bacon this past winter but life got in the way of plans (as it tends to) so that is now on hold until August/September.
I've yet to look into tanning and glue making, though would like to have a crack at both. I used to have a pair of rabbit skin mocs that a friend made, perfect for this weather.

    Me neither.

I can tackle something around the size of a duck/rabbit, but a cow, pig, antelope etc., would be beyond me.

:) From what I've seen pigs, deer and probably coos require being hoisted to be bled out and dressed out. Pig killing was tradionally a messy time. If you read that book Driving Over Lemons, I'm sure there's an account of trad pig slaughtering in there.

With porkers you have to scorch the bristles off, I do recall. It's a big job.

  • I've seen pigs being slaughtered and drawn, in an abattoir, and it looks like hard and tricky work.
