    quite topical:

Bit of a funny way to go about it though, and surely an almightily expensive 'more than just a gap year'.

:) Just a flying visit as am about to head out (lottie and L!dl). I was in Wilkos looking at the price of their camping stuff and was quite astonished at the price of their waterproof matches.

The Mad Bushcrafters taught us how to waterproof matches; take a small box and make sure the heads are all at the same end. Light a candle and allow the wax to melt and drip inside the box until all the ends are covered. You can take them out of the wax one at a time and the rest should stay waterproof.

PS a few waterproof(ed) matches are a worthy addition to a survival kit. You can store them in a repurposed lip balm tube or in a small plastic pill pot. HTH.

    Catch you laters GQ xx

Pah I am not near but Warrington is the one I go to. I think the other is Leeds but even that is miles in the other direction. There is another small one but I can't remember where it is.

Please may I join the "Considered a bit weird by friends and neighbours" club? I am a fully paid-up member de facto anyway LOL

Ah well, I am a step further towards being ready for an emergency, just ordered 100 water purification tablets. The blurb said one tablet is good for 1 lt water so I reckon using 2 lt of water per person per day (drinking and tooth cleaning - we can wash in unpurified boiled rain water from the other tank) we have nearly 2 weeks' worth of viable water, not a very long term plan but it would help for the beginning of whatever and give us time to think of next step. I shall get more in the future but am doing this a bit at a time.

I have a fair amount of whole grains and pulses and quite a few tins, pasta, bulghur/couscous, dry soya chunks, seeds for sprouting etc. and always aim to have a few lts of oil in stock. This is normal for me, but of course now I am starting thinking of building up a bigger stock for prepping purposes. However I feel quite prepared for a mini-emergency such as a few days of panic buying. I plant loads of radishes and perpetual spinach in my garden, as well as a form of cultivated dandelion (Cicoria) which keep sprouting up over and over again and are winter hardy, so I hope we would have something green in addition to sprouting seeds.

I have always been like this, but only in the last few years thinking more on the prepping line, however not done much about it. This thread is really very useful for me to take further steps.

I would love to do a survival course but really baulk at the prospect of killing rabbits, birds, fish and squirrels, let alone gut them and eat them. I am sure I would do so in a heartbeat if it depended on my family's or my survival, but I find this part of survival skills very VERY hard, so I haven't done anything about it yet, other than just making very few initial enquiries.

If anyone has suggestions for decent, serious and inexpensive survival skills courses I would be grateful. I am seriously thinking of doing an Urban Survival course, there are a few on offer but would much prefer to have a recommendation.

Meanwhile I have been accepted for the two hours AA refresher driver course so I can re-acquire that skill, have made enquiries re. cycling courses in my borough (free, will go after I come back from my holiday). Someone was going to oil and mini-service my bike but that did not happen, perhaps I should see if I can get bike-repair skills too. All this needs to happen when I come back from Italy, no point in starting lots of stuff now and having to drop it in a couple of weeks (OMG I AM GOING SO SOON!).

Next purchase needs to be wind up torches and a decent first aid kit, all our first aid stuff is scattered here and there, I would know where to find savlon and plasters but not in the same place, need to get that organised.

The log splitter has arrived and this weekend, whether permitting, we are having a go at chopping and splitting a few logs, starting winter preps.

Ok I am off to do some reading, with a cup of tea, in bed, taking advantage of a bit of peace and quiet in my home. Good night all!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Beans and rice are great emergency foods. You buy big bags of them in bulk, and they stay good for years. I've got 25 pound bags of pinto beans I bought 4 years ago that are still good today. I've been eating these beans for the past few weeks. When they get a few years old, just start eating the older ones and buy a new bag. Simple stuff yet very effective.

Caterina sorry missed your post re a croydon meet I might be able to later in the year when you get back would be lovely to finally meet up with you and possibly other local oldstylers..we can all be weird together then lolol
    :D

Ginny I've lost count of the number of times my 'big red bag' has been out for other peoples emergencies..latest being steristrips for a toddler across the road after an argument with door

My immediate neighbours are pretty good and if they have to borrow anything mostly replace it i.e toddlers grateful mum came over with a whole pack of steristrips, neighbours little girls made me a gorgeous clay heart for the kitchen as mum had run out of onions and beans and I sent in some homemade jam.

When we had the bad snow year before last all the neighbours came out and pushed the cars together and had a huge snowball fight with all the kids the hot choccie and doughnuts together so its not all bad here :D
