Meanwhile due to the incessant rain I now need wellingtons to slosh my way across the field. Do they do galoshes for border collies? She's not in the first flush either....
Climate change, don't ya love it....Come back crisp cold weather!

WonderCollie swears by his Muttlucks. Keeps his paws warm and dry but his feathers (Rough Collie by name, posh by nature) are soaked. One of his little Sheltie friends has a full snowsuit he wears in winter. And yes all the other dogs do appear to laugh at little Tristan in his getup!

Kittie, don't you think we'd go back to steam powered pumps for the mines and steam trains to transport it? After all, it was a sort of symbiotic relationship that got the Industrial Revolution going - steam pumps meant they could mine deeper without mines flooding and cheap coal meant steam power was cost effective.

And if there is a little ice age we'd not be worrying about the warming effect of the extra carbon emissions from burning coal

we couldn`t possibly get up the amount of coal we would need, most of our coal now is from abroad. As an ex physicist and an eco person, then nuclear is far and away the best way, self sustaining and clean. Let`s not forget the terrible fogs and smogs that us `oldies` had to put up with when coal was used for everything. So many people got very bad chests then. We need that power as fast as it can be built, that plus new battery technology and we could survive. I am talking temperatures of -40, when steam would freeze. Most of us could survive if we have electricity for a few hours a day

  • yes bluebag, agreed. I was thinking tent in a room for those with poor insulation and/or with large open plan rooms

Mrs LW. you are so right, skills are going to be in short supply. Many a time I have tried to hint to my family re doing things the os way and I can see them laugh behind their hands

I may well consider re-looking at my stock of woollen goods like blankets and socks but there are other good insulators like flectalon, I need to have a good think.

I got a cheap whistling kettle from an outdoors shop. I'm not sure what it was made of. Aluminium? Tin? It was bright red and quite smart! However I ended up chucking it as water boiled in it had a foul taste and there was a peculiar smell when it was heating.. I think you have to be careful where pans etc are made from cheap materials. :(

Aye, I grew up just the same, I can't get my head round how we have fridges, freezers, washing machines, on-line shopping, dryers and all the labour saving stuff we have now, and we seem somehow to have less time? Truly baffles me.
I think the pace of change has been ramping up. So people like me 'of a certain age' (coughs) can remember a totally different world.
And going back another generation - those in their 80s and 90s - were brought up in a radically different world. In fact, talking to people of that age about their upbringing, it sounds like a different universe!
We have become more and more deskilled and more reliant on technology throughout.
I don't think youngsters can comprehend it because it is not within their experience. I think it would be good if schools could bring in older and elderly people to talk about their lives.
The increasing generation gap bothers me. In particular the hate threads - yes even on MSE - aimed at 'baby boomers' who are often held accountable for all society's ills.
Heaven help us if we get any glitches in the matrix

I'm probably a bit fixated about such things - maybe it would have worn off with use. Let us know how you get on!

Thanks - I'll look these up!
My collie (who is getting on a bit) has a snazzy red parka - also a bright yellow reflective jacket for when we are out in the dark.
