Valk-Scot - Golden Hands Magazine! Wow, that brings back memories - my mum has a huge stash of those (and lots of other patterns which would probably be considered very trendy and "vintage" now!). She also has one of those old-fashioned manual Singer machines in the loft... I think my Prepping Plans ought to include making room for her (and them) in my house!

That old fashioned Singer hand crank will work just fine if you clean the lint out and give it a good oiling. And if there's no electricity your modern machine wouldn't be usable for any make do and mending after all. Just make sure you've got a few spare needles for it. 99% of these old Singer domestic machines take the standard modern needle.

Thank you - next time I'm visiting I think I'll check it over and see if it's still functioning. We both have modern electric sewing machines (hers gets used lots more than mine, sadly - work and children conspire against my having much free time to indulge!) so maybe in an emergency we could raid the needles from those. Hmmm. Food for thought.

If you have kids and they want to learn to sew a hand crank is ideal for them as it only goes as fast as they can turn the handle. And kids really love turning that handle, it's much more satisfying for them than a scarey foot controlled electric machine. When my DD (10) brings her friends home to play we usually set up what my OH calls The Sweatshop on the dining table and they sit in a line in front of my three Singer handcranks and turn out cushions and wee bags and stuff for their bedrooms.

What a great idea! My DD8 would love that! My mum has been teaching her knitting and crochet at every opportunity so she will probably jump at the idea of passing another skill on (DD is far more interested in it than I was at that age: I was in my late 20s/early 30s before I saw the light - mum had been trying to teach me all my life but with limited success :o).

Well, teaching self sufficiency skills to the next generation is a vital part of prepping too you know. ;)

I have several volumes of the golden hands mags in the loft. I do use the patterns at times. Maybe I will have to get them out once all this decorating is done.

If there are food supply problems then rationing would come into place pretty darn quick and I bet that ration books are already printed out based on the last census. Our law and disorder problems will come from people who were never on the census.
    :)
They are already printed................friend of mine has a small printing factory and last yr she got orders for ration books to be printed tens of thousands of them they were not told where or for what country they were for for!!!!! but they were in English not foreign , all very cloak and dagger minimum contact etc... when they were ordered......they were short term ration books.............DO THEY KNOW SOMETHING WE DONT KNOW?

    CraigyWV,
Nothing surprises me much anymore. I wonder if they are intended because of some emergency/war or because of the possiblity of shortages caused by problems with weather where crops fail due to flood/drought.

Previously when rationing happened it was mainly small shops, the typical high street, this time with supermarkets I wonder what difference that would make. Would their business virtually fold overnight, would they take priority over small retailers? I am thinking mainly about the distribution of food.

Tens of thousands of ration books isn't anywhere near enough. I hope they were just adding to their stocks!

I don't recoil in horror over the fact the government have things like this already printed, ready etc. I applaud them.
